J.C. Escarra has emerged as the New York Yankees’ most unexpected trade asset. The backup catcher is drawing serious interest from multiple teams ahead of the deadline.

Rival organizations are monitoring the 30-year-old closely. His stock has risen dramatically over the past year. Teams began inquiring about Escarra last summer and haven’t stopped calling.

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman revealed the extent of league-wide fascination with the journeyman.

“One scout texted: ‘A lot of teams LOVE Escarra,'” Sherman reported. “And keep in mind that Cashman was getting calls about him as early as last trade deadline — before the general world knew he had re-risen from Uber driver to potential major leaguer.”

J.C. Escarra’s remarkable journey from substitute teacher and Uber driver to major league contributor has captivated scouts. His gritty background and versatility make him an attractive piece for contending clubs.

The Yankees find themselves in an enviable position. They may be buyers at the deadline while possessing a valuable trade chip in Escarra.

Escarra’s performance speaks louder than playing time

Escarra has maximized his limited opportunities with New York. He’s appeared in just 36 of the Yankees’ first 95 games but made each at-bat count.

His .215/.312/.354 slash line across 93 plate appearances tells only part of the story. The three home runs provide pop from the catcher position. His 89 wRC+ indicates league-average offensive production in a reserve role.

Escarra’s discipline at the plate sets him apart from typical backup catchers. His 14.0% strikeout rate ranks well above league standards. The 11.8% walk rate demonstrates exceptional patience.

Advanced metrics reveal his refined approach. Escarra chases only 20.3% of pitches outside the strike zone. His whiff rate stays under 20%, showcasing remarkable contact skills for a player with minimal big-league experience.

The defensive side shows equal polish. He has contributed 2 Defensive Runs Saved in 197 innings behind the plate. Baseball Savant credits him with 4 Framing Runs, indicating strong pitch-calling abilities.

His versatility extends beyond catching duties. Escarra has handled first base and third base assignments this season. He logged outfield innings at Triple-A last year, proving his multi-positional value.

Yankees hold key piece for deadline deals

The Yankees sit at 53-42 and remain focused on strengthening their playoff roster. Escarra’s rising market value provides general manager Brian Cashman with unexpected leverage.

Teams seeking to catch depth view Escarra as an ideal target. His combination of defensive skills, plate discipline, and positional flexibility appeals to multiple organizations.

The cost control factor makes him even more attractive. Escarra signed a minor league contract in 2024 after years in independent baseball. His affordable salary allows acquiring teams significant financial flexibility.

New York hasn’t indicated a willingness to trade Escarra. His growing reputation across baseball gives the Yankees options they didn’t expect to have.

The former independent league grinder has become one of New York’s most intriguing trade assets. His value could unlock bigger deals for impact players before the deadline arrives.
