He wasn’t on the Opening Day roster, but for this ex-Uber driver, just being a Yankee is enough

J.C. Escarra’s voice cracked. His mother sobbed. And in a span of 30 seconds, one of the most moving moments of the Yankees‘ young season was born — a phone call between a son and his biggest supporter, letting her know the unthinkable had just happened.

He’d made the New York Yankees.

Escarra, 29, has yet to appear in a Major League game. He didn’t play on Opening Day. But when the Yankees finalized their 26-man roster, Escarra’s name was there, earning a spot as a backup catcher after years spent bouncing through the minors.

“We made it”: The moment that went viral

The emotional call to his mom, Marinelys, went viral almost immediately. Appearing with her son on NBC’s TODAY, she recounted how casually the conversation began — until the words hit: “I made the team.”

“I just started crying,” she said. “And then I couldn’t stop.”

Marinelys said she cried for days leading up to March 27, when she walked into Yankee Stadium for her son’s first official day on the roster. The Yankees beat the Brewers 4–2, but for her, the scoreboard barely mattered.

“Everything was perfect,” she said. “The timing couldn’t have been better.”

“One more no” from walking away

Escarra’s path to the Bronx didn’t follow the usual script. Drafted by the Orioles in 2017, he drifted through various minor league systems before landing with the Yankees organization. Along the way, he worked as an Uber driver, substitute teacher, and baseball coach to support himself — even as the dream began to slip further away.

“At one point, I was one more ‘no’ from quitting,” he admitted. “But I knew in my heart I had to give it one more year.”

That decision wasn’t made alone. Escarra and his wife had just gotten married. They were expecting their first child. They’d bought an apartment. The pressure to provide was real. Still, with his wife’s blessing, he stayed in the game — and made the most of his final shot.

A family win, through and through

When manager Aaron Boone broke the news in Tampa, he did it with a fake-out, teasing that Escarra was being sent down. But then came the truth: he was heading to the Bronx. And the first call Escarra made was to the woman who never stopped believing in him.

“My wife, my dad, my brother, my mom — they were all there through everything,” Escarra said. “When I got released. When I thought it was over. They were the ones who said, ‘You’ve got more left.’”

His story is now bigger than a roster spot. It’s about perseverance, family, and the sacrifices that go unseen behind the scenes.

Born to be a Yankee

Fittingly, Escarra grew up in a Yankees household. His brother’s middle name is Derek — yes, after Derek Jeter. The dream wasn’t just personal. It was part of the family’s identity.

“When he called and said ‘we made the team,’ that’s exactly what it felt like,” Marinelys said. “It wasn’t just him. It was all of us.”

Escarra hasn’t made his Major League debut yet, but his presence alone has already resonated far beyond the clubhouse. And when that moment comes — whether it’s a pinch-hit appearance, a late-game substitution, or his name in the starting lineup — it’ll mean more than just a stat line.

It’ll be the payoff for a journey most people never got to see.
