A half-century tradition has given way to modern sensibilities as the New York Yankees announce a historic modification to their iconic grooming policy. The legendary clean-shaven mandate, instituted by George Steinbrenner in 1973, has been reimagined under Hal Steinbrenner’s leadership, now permitting players to sport well-maintained beards—a change that signals a new chapter in the franchise’s storied history.
For team barber Davey Castillo, known affectionately throughout the clubhouse as “Davey Cuts,” this policy shift opens unprecedented creative opportunities. After years of ensuring compliance with the organization’s strict no-beard mandate, Castillo now stands ready to pioneer what he promises will be “the best beards in the game” for the Bronx Bombers.
Elated over long-awaited shift in tradition

The decision to modernize the Yankees’ grooming standards represents more than a simple policy change—it marks a significant cultural evolution for baseball’s most prestigious franchise. This transformation emerged from thoughtful discussions between team management and leadership figures, including captain Aaron Judge and ace pitcher Gerrit Cole, who advocated for updating certain traditions while preserving the team’s distinctive character.
Hal Steinbrenner has emphasized that while beards are now acceptable, they must maintain a “well-groomed, clean look.” The organization maintains its prohibition on long hair, demonstrating a commitment to balancing tradition with modern expression. Clear guidelines are forthcoming to ensure the team’s professional image remains intact.
“It is important to the leaders of our team that we maintain that disciplined look,” Steinbrenner said. “We’re not going for a ‘Duck Dynasty’ situation.”
“Especially guys having their beards the whole time they’ve been playing, they were on the field with beards,” Castillo racted to the announcement. “To have to shave, it’s a big change, but it was the Yankee way. I had to do my job and make them look good in any way possible.”
A new canvas for Yankees’ barber

For Castillo, who has cultivated deep relationships with Yankees players during his tenure, this announcement transforms his professional landscape. Throughout his career, he has served as both barber and confidant to numerous players forced to bid farewell to their facial hair upon donning the pinstripes—a requirement that occasionally deterred potential signings, including notable cases like Johnny Damon and Brian Wilson.
Castillo reflected on how he had provided countless players with their inaugural Yankees shave, noting that the transition was particularly challenging for those who had maintained beards throughout their careers.
The policy revision now enables Castillo to exercise his creative expertise while working within the organization’s refined parameters. His vision encompasses sophisticated, well-maintained beards that complement rather than compromise the Yankees’ classic aesthetic.
“You could have a nice, full beard, but it doesn’t have to be messy or straggly,” Castillo explained. “It should look as crisp as those pinstripes—sharp, tight, and professional.”
Castillo on Cole’s reluctance for beards

The current Yankees roster, including many who have never known professional baseball without the clean-shaven requirement, approaches this new freedom with measured enthusiasm. Gerrit Cole, renowned for his methodical approach both on and off the field, acknowledged that while specific guidelines remain pending, the emphasis on maintaining professional appearances is clear.
“The only information we were given is that we’re not trying to look like ‘Duck Dynasty,'” Cole quipped.
Beyond mere aesthetics, this policy adjustment represents a broader cultural shift within the organization. The allowance of beards aligns the Yankees with contemporary MLB standards while preserving players’ individuality.
“I love the style of beard where it’s not looking too messy, too crazy,” Castillo responded. “It looks clean. It looks presentable. I think that’s what the New York Yankees are about. It’s about class. It’s about looking the best. No stragglers. Not messy looking. Everything is tight. Sideburns going into the beard. You could have a nice full beard, but it doesn’t have to be hanging off and straggly. It’s nice and cut and clean so when you’re on camera and you’re performing, you’re looking clean, like how good those pinstripes look in that uniform, that’s how good your beard should look.”
Looking Ahead: The Yankees’ new look in 2025

As the 2025 season approaches, Castillo prepares to craft the first generation of officially sanctioned Yankees beards. His extensive experience and creative vision position him to establish new grooming standards that could become as distinctive as the team’s legendary uniforms.
His approach focuses on developing sophisticated styles that enhance rather than detract from the Yankees’ professional image. Castillo envisions creating signature looks that maintain the organization’s high standards while allowing for individual expression.
The modified grooming policy reflects the Yankees’ ability to evolve while honoring their traditions. For players, it represents an opportunity to express personality within professional boundaries. For Castillo, it opens new avenues to showcase his artistry in service of baseball’s most prestigious franchise.
When Opening Day arrives at Yankee Stadium, fans will witness more than just the familiar pinstripes—they’ll see the first manifestation of a modernized Yankees tradition. While the team’s commitment to excellence remains unchanged, its expression now includes a broader spectrum of professional appearance, marking a new chapter in the franchise’s evolution.
