Bret Boone made a strong defense of his brother and manager Aaron Boone while calling out the New York Yankees for fielding an inferior team. He acknowledges that his brother Aaron might be held accountable for the disappointing Yankees season, but there are numerous other contributing factors that deserve more blame.

Speaking on “Sports Talk Chicago,” Bret Boone, who himself was an MLB player from 1992 to 2005 and got three All-Star selections, cited several reasons for the Yankees’ subpar performance on the field while making a defense of his brother Aaron Boone.

Boone highlighted Yankees’ problems

Bret Boone stated that he observes the team regularly and believes that Anthony Volpe has the potential to become a skilled player. However, he expressed concern that if Volpe is hitting fifth for the New York Yankees, it could pose problems for the team. He shared these thoughts prior to his brother Aaron’s Yankees winning 4-2 against the Tigers on Tuesday night.

“I watch that team on a daily basis, and all due respect to [Anthony] Volpe, I think he’s gonna be a really good player — if he’s hitting fifth for the New York Yankees, you’re in trouble,” he told.

Highlighting pitching concerns, Boone expressed how the initial optimism about Carlos Rodon, the offseason signing, fizzled out as the Yankees starter managed just eight starts so far with a 1-4 record alongside a 5.97 ERA.

Furthermore, Boone highlighted the challenges faced by Luis Severino, the pitcher posting a 6.64 ERA across his 17 appearances. He also noted that Nestor Cortes, an All-Star, encountered multiple injuries.

Boone also discussed Josh Donaldson’s release, attributing it to age, and mentioned the impact of various injuries on players like Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge, and Harrison Bader. Additionally, he touched on catcher Jose Trevino’s season-ending injury as contributing to the team’s struggles.

The former MLB All-Star also pointed out that Giancarlo Stanton has a batting average of approximately .200 adversely impacting the Yankees offense.

Bret defended his brother Aaron Boone

Bret acknowledged that his brother Aaron Boone has been managing well and mentioned that he provides honest feedback, even though he tries to remain unbiased.

Bret Boone revealed that the players have a strong affection for Aaron Boone and mentioned how the Yankees manager supports them perhaps even excessively, showing deep care for his team and players. Bret described Aaron Boone as one of the most fervent individuals he has had the privilege to know.

“The players love Aaron Boone. He backs them to a fault. He loves his team. He loves his players. He’s one of the most passionate men I’ve ever been around.”

Bret Boone offered his brother counsel, suggesting that he should avoid being overly critical of himself. He recognized that managing the Yankees comes with intense pressure, often likened to a high-stakes situation.

“And I think that’s what Aaron’s got to deal with. And I think Aaron’s done a great job. And I’ll tell you, I have to take my brother hat off sometimes. But you have to be honest. I’m honest with him, too.”

Bret Boone conveyed that once the game is underway and the coaching staff has done their utmost to assemble the optimal lineup and positions for the team, the responsibilities are fulfilled. He jokingly mentioned the contemporary practice of getting left-handed and right-handed pitchers warmed up in the bullpen, often guided by computer analytics. He playfully shared that he teases Aaron Boone about the situation, asking him in jest about his course of action.

“You get the lefty up, you get the righty up, and nowadays everything’s run by a computer. So I tease Aaron a lot about it and say, ‘What are you gonna do?’

Yankees fate beyond manager’s control

Bret Boone suggested that there comes a moment when one must acknowledge that certain aspects are beyond their control. He conveyed that managers should recognize that they have done their best with the players available on the field.

Bret Boone pointed out that, in his view, the lineup and players fielded by the New York Yankees on a regular basis may not match up to the quality of top-tier teams. He mentioned that this situation is simply a reality and that outcomes don’t always go as planned.

Bret Boone emphasized once again that he doesn’t attribute the responsibility to his brother for the current situation. He said that if anyone claiming to have a strong understanding of baseball went on solely blaming Aaron Boone for this Yankees’ performance, he would find it would be difficult to engage in a meaningful conversation with him for his inability ability to assess situations objectively.

“If you’re a good baseball man that can honestly evaluate, and you put this season on Aaron Boone, then you’re a guy that really can’t have a conversation with me because you don’t know what you’re talking about,” Bret Boone told.

Bret Boone also shared that his genuine assessment of Aaron Boone as a manager stands independently from their sibling relationship.

Boone have had some good teams but wrong moves by Cashman have cost the time and organization. Because it’s not about home runs. It’s about getting hits and getting on base. The fundamental of baseball ⚾ . The game u learned as a kid an learn to love.

How everyone is saying it’s Big G’s fault for not staying healthy yes and no. Him and judges can only hit 🎯 so many home runs the rest of the team still got to hit the ball. Home runs is a joy to see. But still got to hit the ball to get on base fundamental baseball hit the ball bunt the ball an steal base. When you stop doing that and think it’s about home runs. Ur in trouble an that’s where we r in trouble. Look where we at for hit and runs and bunts and steals. It’s about home runs. Exciting but no…
