“I’ve been feeling OK,” Chisholm said. “Hit it hard, get out. Sometimes not even making contact. But every day, going out there and grinding, trying to make things happen for the team.”

“It’s super frustrating, especially when it’s such a close game and we’re going into extras,” Chisholm said. “It just sucks.”

Boone acknowledges Yankees’ frustration
Boone was asked about after the loss to the Atlanta Braves at Yankee Stadium, a game in which the Yankees wasted a brilliant start from Cam Schlittler and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The manager did not sugarcoat where his second baseman stands.
“I think all year, just struggling to really get dialed in,” Boone said. “He’s never had that real hot streak, which he’s certainly capable of. We’ve seen over the last couple years, where it’s two, three, four weeks of impactful damage, speed, getting on, things like that.”

With no second base prospect knocking on the door, the Yankees loom as a candidate to hand Chisholm a qualifying offer, a one-year deal often called a pillow contract, according to MLB.com. It would let him rebuild his value while giving the Yankees a familiar bat at a set price.
But Chisholm is making his Yankees return harder.
The timing is what gives Boone’s remark its weight. Chisholm is a pending free agent, and a big 2026 could have set up a major payday. The raw power and speed have shown up, with 17 home runs and 30 stolen bases, but the bat has gone cold in the contact department, a sharp drop from his 2025 season.
That year, Chisholm posted a .813 OPS with 31 home runs and a 30-30 campaign, per Baseball-Reference, and looked like a cornerstone. This season, his OPS sits below .700 and his value has cratered by wins above replacement. The gap between the two years is the difference between a nine-figure contract and a much murkier market.
The stakes reach beyond one player. The Yankees face a potential exodus this winter. Trent Grisham has already received and accepted a qualifying offer, while David Bednar, Paul Goldschmidt, Tim Hill, Amed Rosario, Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn are all set to reach the market, per MLB.com.
