In Saturday’s victory over the Astros, the Yankees’ infusion of youthful talent played a pivotal role, with four players aged 24 or younger contributing with an RBI. The youthful contingent was instrumental in securing the 5-4 win.

In the second inning, the Yankees’ Oswald Peraza, 23 years old, initiated the scoring with a single. This was followed by a bases-loaded walk drawn by Oswaldo Cabrera, 24, before the inning concluded. Peraza had a productive night, going 3 for 4, which included a double.

The game was tied at four after an error by Astros’ second baseman Mauricio Dubon in the fifth inning, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from 24-year-old Austin Wells. Next, 22-year-old Everson Pereira contributed to the run-scoring effort through his RBI single.

Aaron Judge hit his 31st homer of 2023 in the third as the Yankees started a showcase of their dominance over the Astros.

Third baseman Oswald Peraza, who has primarily been known for his defensive skills rather than hitting this season, exhibited signs of improvement at the plate during Saturday night’s 5-4 Yankees victory at Minute Maid Park.

Having entered the game with a challenging 0-for-18 slump in his previous six outings, Peraza managed to break through with his first multi-hit performance of the season. He went 3-for-4 in the game and contributed an RBI single during the second inning while batting eighth in the lineup.

Manager Aaron Boone noted that Peraza was involved in competitive at-bats, displaying discipline by refraining from swinging at challenging pitches. Boone explained that Peraza is actively working on refining his approach to stay behind the ball and create the necessary separation to fully utilize his strength and bat speed. The manager expressed his satisfaction in witnessing Peraza achieve positive outcomes during the game.

Peraza, aged 22, consistently displayed a strong hitting performance in the minor leagues, which continued even during his time in Triple-A this season. However, his ability to adapt to major league pitching has been a concern, with his batting average sitting at .129 in 29 games leading up to Saturday.

Despite these struggles, the Yankees have made a commitment to provide Peraza with a genuine opportunity for the remainder of the season. Since being called up on August 22, he has been included in the starting lineup for 10 out of the Yankees’ 12 games following his return. Out of those, nine have seen him at third base, and one had him playing shortstop.

On Friday night, when the Yankees secured their victory over the Astros, their lineup featured the presence of five rookies, while another rookie made an appearance from the bullpen.

The starting lineup included Anthony Volpe (22), Oswald Peraza (23), Everson Pereira (22), Jasson Dominguez (20), and Austin Wells (24). This occurrence was a rare one for the Yankees, as it marked only the second time since 1971 that the team had fielded five players aged 24 or younger in a single game. Furthermore, Randy Vasquez, also aged 24, contributed with two scoreless innings when called upon in relief.

Wells reflected on the exceptional nature of the moment, emphasizing how rare it is for a group of players to make their major league debuts alongside four or five individuals they had previously played with in the minor leagues.

Dominguez, whose MLB debut had been highly anticipated ever since he signed a lucrative $5.1 million contract at the tender age of 16, stole the spotlight with a remarkable home run off the much older Justin Verlander in his very first at-bat. This marked a significant moment for the centerfielder.

Meanwhile, Wells had a solid start to his major league career, securing a single in his initial plate appearance and successfully handling the duties behind the plate throughout the entire game. However, the infusion of youth into the Yankees’ roster, amidst a challenging season, extends beyond just these two players.

Anthony Volpe could potentially become a cornerstone player for the team, having achieved a rare 20-20 season as a rookie. Everson Pereira aims to prove his mettle as a potential future left fielder. Oswald Peraza’s adaptability makes him a valuable asset, with his versatility allowing him to excel at second or third base while Anthony Volpe holds his natural position at shortstop.

Randy Vásquez and Jhony Brito, both 25, harbor hopes of making a significant impact on next year’s pitching staff. Meanwhile, Oswaldo Cabrera, aged 24, has demonstrated his versatility as a super utility player, despite facing challenges at the plate during a tough season.

Volpe, who holds the most experience among the group, expressed his joy for Domínguez, Wells, Everson, and all the other rookies. He shared his advice with them, encouraging them to savor the moment and maximize their enjoyment.

In total, the Yankees’ active roster consists of 28 players, with 10 of them aged 26 or younger. Among these, nine players fall within the 25 or younger category, while seven are even younger, at 24 or below. This composition of the team’s roster clearly reflects the organization’s shift in focus toward the future, particularly beyond the year 2024.

The team’s veteran core underperformed, compounded by issues with roster construction and injuries, which ultimately pushed the Yankees out of playoff contention as September began. Despite this challenging situation, the younger players on the team are eager to seize the opportunities presented to them. They are also delighted to embark on this journey together as they look ahead to the future.

Pereira expressed his excitement, particularly about playing alongside many of his minor league teammates. He acknowledged the significant effort it takes to reach the major leagues and emphasized that they had spent a considerable amount of time playing together in the minors. Being in the big leagues was a source of great excitement for him.

In the case of Domínguez, the switch-hitter was slotted into the third position in the lineup on Saturday, a move that followed his debut in the fifth spot. Aaron Boone attributed this decision to his desire for lineup balance and the inclusion of three left-handed hitters. Nevertheless, the manager expressed confidence in Domínguez’s capability to perform well in such a prominent batting position, especially in only his second game.

Boone conveyed his belief that Domínguez is well-suited for the major leagues and expressed confidence in his abilities. He also indicated that he wasn’t concerned about Domínguez’s position in the lineup, stating his belief that Domínguez has the potential to become an excellent player and has high expectations for himself in the big leagues.

Meanwhile, Wells shifted up one spot from the fifth position to the sixth as he continued to handle the duties behind the plate.

Rookie pitchers got the role well

The Astros managed to score four runs against Luis Severino, who had a challenging outing on Saturday, allowing six hits, four earned runs, one walk, and recording three strikeouts over four innings, throwing 104 pitches.

In contrast, Jhony Brito stepped up with an impressive 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. The 25-year-old held the Astros to just two hits and no walks while striking out one.

Manager Boone mentioned the possibility of Vásquez and Brito getting some starting opportunities in the final month of the season. While they have primarily served as rotation fill-ins this year, they are currently in the bullpen due to Michael King’s five-day schedule.

Brito had entered Saturday with a 5.12 ERA over 70.1 innings and 18 games, including 13 starts, while Vásquez boasted a 2.22 ERA over 24.1 frames and six games, including four starts.

Is Florial the next to get a call?

Estevan Florial, a 25-year-old former top prospect in the Yankees’ system, has had an outstanding season at Triple-A. Despite his strong performance, the Yankees have consistently chosen to promote other minor leaguers and experienced players.

Manager Boone mentioned on Saturday that Florial’s name has come up in discussions within the organization. However, the situation is complicated by the fact that Florial is not currently on the 40-man roster. He was removed from the roster when the Yankees designated him for assignment in April, but he went unclaimed and has continued to be part of the organization.

Manager Boone mentioned that Estevan Florial has been a topic of discussion within the organization for a significant portion of the past two months. Boone also noted that Florial possesses the skills and abilities necessary for success. However, the Yankees have chosen to prioritize the evaluation of a few other players over him at this time.

Florial’s batting statistics as of Saturday showed him with a .281 batting average, a .381 on-base percentage, and a .548 slugging percentage. He had hit 24 home runs, driven in 66 runs, and stolen 23 bases. However, his strikeout rate stood at 30%. After securing another series win, the Yankees aimed to conclude their extended road trip with another victory on Sunday.
