The New York Yankees’ 2025 success story extends beyond marquee sluggers and household names. At the center of their impressive campaign stands a determined 24-year-old shortstop who has weathered criticism and unfair comparisons to emerge as a foundational piece. Anthony Volpe, previously questioned and measured against icons like Derek Jeter or rising stars like Bobby Witt Jr., is finally establishing his unique identity through consistent performance and unwavering determination.

Recent weeks have transformed Volpe from organizational uncertainty into quiet reliability. Following his game-changing bases-clearing double against the Angels on Monday and another crucial RBI single Tuesday, his 32 runs batted in now pace all American League shortstops. Though lacking flashy headlines, Volpe’s contributions have become essential to New York’s success.

Numbers Don’t Lie: Volpe Producing in the Clutch

Late May finds Volpe posting a solid .245/.326/.439 slash line with a .765 OPS. More significantly, he has reached base safely in 43 of the Yankees’ 53 games. His past month reveals even stronger trends: .284 average, .838 OPS, and 131 wRC+ demonstrate sustained offensive improvement. These aren’t hollow statistics — they represent timely production when games hang in the balance.

Baseball-Reference shows Volpe excelling in pressure moments with a .278 average and .900 OPS in high-leverage situations. FanGraphs’ alternative leverage calculations still credit him with an impressive .802 OPS. Within a lineup featuring Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and other established stars, Volpe consistently delivers crucial hits when the Yankees need momentum shifts.

Beyond the stats: The defensive anchor

Volpe’s fielding excellence remains unquestioned. Since his major league debut, he has ranked top-three in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and top-six in Outs Above Average (OAA) among all shortstops. As teams increasingly prioritize versatility and defense at premium positions, his glove work alone justifies regular playing time.

Now he’s complementing elite defense with legitimate offensive contributions. His .332 expected weighted on-base average (xwOBA) represents a significant improvement from 2024’s .305 mark, indicating genuine development beneath surface numbers. Projections suggest 46 doubles for Volpe across 150 games, providing gap power and situational hitting to complement the team’s power-heavy approach.

Why the criticism?

Strong performance hasn’t silenced all doubters. Volpe continues facing fan criticism rooted in elevated expectations. As New York’s first-round selection and MLB Pipeline’s No. 5 overall prospect in 2023, immediate stardom seemed anticipated. When he didn’t match contemporaries like Gunnar Henderson or Corbin Carroll, comparisons became condemnation.

Critics demanded lineup demotions, minor league assignments, or replacement by unproven prospect George Lombard Jr. Such reactions ignored realistic projections. Volpe was never projected as a franchise-carrying superstar. His 60 FV prospect grade suggested a player capable of 3-4 WAR annually with potential All-Star recognition.

Current production aligns perfectly with those expectations. His 6.7 fWAR since 2023 ranks seventh among players 24 or younger. Steamer projects him finishing 2025 with 3.9 fWAR — excellent value for a first-place Yankees squad commanding the AL East.

‘Feel really good about the brand of baseball we’re playing’

Volpe maintains characteristic humility despite growing recognition. “I think every night, we’re just going out with confidence in each other,” he explained. “We just feel really good about the brand of baseball we’re playing. It’s clean, and we want to be aggressive — take advantage of every inning, every opportunity.”

That confidence translates to on-field execution. Whether delivering clutch line drives or making smart baserunning decisions, Volpe executes fundamental plays correctly. His swing lacks dramatic flair but provides consistent efficiency. His at-bats don’t always create highlight reels but generate productive outcomes. Most importantly, his demeanor remains steady through inevitable slumps.

Volpe’s unique value

Stepping back reveals Volpe’s exceptional combination of attributes: a 24-year-old shortstop offering elite defense, above-average offense, sharp baseball instincts, and postseason experience while performing under intense New York pressure. Most franchises would build around such talent. The Yankees, unfortunately, have often misunderstood his true worth.

Volpe isn’t the team’s premier offensive weapon. His value transcends traditional box score metrics. His 2025 performance demonstrates the capacity for growth, resilience through adversity, and the ability to overcome narratives built on impatience rather than evidence.

Setting the tone in the Bronx

As the Yankees pursue October glory, Volpe has emerged among their most dependable performers. His ability to maintain composure within New York’s intense media spotlight might equal his defensive and offensive contributions. This steady leadership represents his most Jeter-like characteristic — not spectacular plays or celebrity status, but unwavering focus under pressure.

During a season featuring 14 victories in 18 games, Volpe’s contributions have elevated good teams toward greatness. He may not command top billing in the Bronx, but he’s becoming one of the organization’s most reliable assets.
