The New York Yankees opened the ALCS with a 5-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night, highlighted by home runs from Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton.
However, the spotlight soon shifted to umpire Mike Estabrook, whose involvement in two calls ignited heated reactions from both fanbases
Ump draws attention in Yankees-Guardians ALCS opener
In the first inning, Aaron Judge found himself at the heart of the first dispute. He was called out on a questionable strike that appeared well outside the zone, instantly drawing a reaction from Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Known for his fiery defense of his players, Boone wasted no time voicing his displeasure to the umpire, clearly feeling the call was unjust.
Fans, both in the stands and on social media, were quick to echo Boone’s frustrations. Many felt the umpire had been out of sync from the start, with some even suggesting that Alex Cobb, the Guardians’ pitcher, was benefiting from an unusually generous strike zone. Calls for more consistency were widespread as the perception grew that the officiating was influencing the game more than the players on the field.
The second incident occurred in the eighth inning. With the Yankees leading, Brayan Rocchio of the Guardians hit a ground ball that slipped past Anthony Rizzo. As Rocchio sprinted toward second base, he collided with Yankees pitcher Tim Hill near first base. After a brief consultation, the umpires ruled interference on the Yankees, allowing Rocchio to advance to second and putting the Guardians in a threatening position with runners on second and third. However, the call sparked controversy, primarily among Guardians fans, who accused the umpires of favoring the Yankees—allegations made without any supporting evidence
The decision only heightened tensions, with Yankees fans applauding the umpires for upholding fair play, while Guardians fans threw out unfounded accusations. Despite the mounting pressure, closer Luke Weaver rose to the occasion, escaping the inning unscathed and preserving the Yankees’ lead.
