NEW YORK — The memories remain vivid for Aaron Judge. His first steps into the Yankees clubhouse in 2013 carried overwhelming nervousness. The rookie expected cold shoulders from established stars. Instead, baseball royalty welcomed him with open arms.

Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and CC Sabathia represented everything Judge aspired to become. These weren’t just teammates — they were living legends occupying the same space as a nervous draft pick.

“They were superstars, and I thought they wouldn’t even look at me,” Judge once recalled in a 2017 interview. “Hearing Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera say they were glad to meet me, that was kind of mind-blowing to me.”

Those initial encounters shaped Judge’s entire Yankees experience. The welcoming culture established by veterans created the perfect environment for his development. Nearly twelve years later, the Yankees slugger has evolved from starstruck rookie to franchise leader, now wearing the captain’s armband that once belonged to his hero.

A Yankees legacy in the making

Aaron Judge hit his 343rd home run in the Yankees vs. Reds game on June 24, 2025, in Cincinnati.

Judge reached another career pinnacle this April. Team USA selected him as captain for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The honor makes him the first Yankees player to receive the designation since Jeter claimed it in 2009.

The appointment validates Judge’s standing as both a Yankees icon and baseball’s most respected figure. His leadership extends far beyond individual statistics and accolades.

The connections between Judge and Jeter run deeper than pinstripes. Both players embodied quiet leadership styles. Both became the faces of their respective Yankees eras. Both transformed from promising prospects into global superstars wearing the most famous uniform in sports.

Yet one crucial distinction separates their legacies.

Judge still searching for October glory

Jeter’s trophy case displays five World Series rings. Judge, despite collecting two MVP awards, the American League home run record, and a captain’s title, continues hunting for his first championship.

Jeter hasn’t forgotten to emphasize what truly matters in Yankees history. During Old Timers’ Day in August 2024, the Hall of Famer delivered a pointed message about championship expectations.

“It doesn’t matter what you do during a 162‑game schedule… it all boils down to the World Series. Win a championship or it’s a failure,” Jeter said.

Those words carry extra weight after last season’s crushing disappointment. The Yankees dominated the American League before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five World Series games. The defeat left lasting scars throughout the organization.

Judge has internalized the failure more than anyone. Teammates notice increased intensity in his preparation. His leadership has become more vocal and demanding this season.

The road ahead

July arrives with the Yankees positioned for another postseason run. Judge continues setting the pace with consistent power and unwavering leadership. The team has navigated injuries and struggles largely because of his steady presence.

The ultimate evaluation still awaits in October. Regular-season excellence means nothing without postseason success in Yankees culture.

Judge keeps building a remarkable individual legacy. Team USA responsibilities and another championship pursuit loom ahead. He embraces every expectation with the same grace those veterans showed him as a rookie.
