The grand ballroom of the New York Hilton sparkled with elegance Saturday evening as more than 800 distinguished guests gathered for the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s time-honored celebration. This prestigious ceremony, a cornerstone of baseball tradition dating back to 1925, traditionally unites the sport’s luminaries to commemorate the season’s outstanding achievements. However, the conspicuous absence of two transcendent stars, Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, cast a subtle shadow over the otherwise illustrious proceedings.

In an unprecedented display of excellence, both Judge and Ohtani captured their respective league MVP awards with unanimous support, achieving a rare distinction that hasn’t been witnessed in consecutive seasons. Yet, neither baseball icon graced the evening’s festivities with their presence. For Judge, the American League’s most valuable player, his absence stemmed from an immensely personal milestone: the imminent arrival of his first child with his wife Samantha Bracksieck.

The evening’s attendees were treated to a touching video message from Judge, who addressed the gathering with characteristic humility and warmth. “I’m truly humbled to be accepting the 2024 AL MVP award,” Judge began. “I want to start by apologizing for missing the award dinner this evening. However, my wife Samantha and I are expecting our first child any day and, unfortunately, could not make it.”

Industry sources confirm the couple, who exchanged vows in December 2021, are preparing to welcome a daughter. Their love story, which began in their high school years, has remained a steadfast constant throughout Judge’s meteoric rise in professional baseball.

Though physically absent from the New York Hilton’s festivities, Judge’s impact resonated through his heartfelt words. He expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and the Yankees organization for their role in his success, saying, “To my coaches, teammates, trainers, and the entire Yankees organization, I’m honored to share this award with each and every one of you. Your support, encouragement, and hard work have meant the world to me.”

Judge also acknowledged the privilege of representing New York, a city that has embraced him since his debut with the Yankees in 2016. “It’s a privilege to be representing the greatest city in the world,” he said. “Thank you again to the Baseball Writers’ Association for this incredible honor. I’m truly grateful and will cherish this moment forever.”

A Season of unparalleled achievement

Judge’s 2024 campaign emerged as a masterclass in baseball excellence. Appearing in 158 contests, the Yankees’ cornerstone player assembled a statistical masterpiece: a .322 batting average, 58 round-trippers, and a personal-best 144 runs batted in. His exceptional performance, coupled with exemplary leadership, proved vital to the Yankees’ successful campaign. Despite falling short against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, Judge’s individual brilliance shone throughout the season.

This latest MVP honor adds to Judge’s growing legacy, complementing his 2022 award-winning season when he etched his name in baseball lore by surpassing Roger Maris’ American League home run record with 62 homers. His sustained excellence has solidified his position as a cornerstone in the Yankees’ pursuit of championship glory.

Ohtani’s California crisis

The evening’s notable absences extended to National League MVP Shohei Ohtani, whose last-minute withdrawal caught organizers off guard. Ohtani, fresh off signing his historic contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, cited the ongoing wildfire crisis in California as the reason for his non-attendance.

“Given the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles that affected us all, it made it very difficult for so many reasons for me and my family to attend,” Ohtani said in a taped video message. “I wanted to dedicate this award to the entire City of Los Angeles, to all the first responders, firefighters, and fire departments for their heroic efforts to combat these fires.”

While Ohtani’s physical presence was missed, the evening’s celebration of his remarkable 2024 achievements as both pitcher and hitter remained a highlight of the proceedings.

Despite missing its two brightest stars, the BBWAA dinner delivered memorable moments in abundance. The evening honored Cy Young recipients Tarik Skubal of the Tigers and the Red Sox’s Chris Sale, alongside Rookies of the Year Luis Gil (Yankees) and Paul Skenes (Pirates). Yankees utility player Oswaldo Cabrera received recognition for his community contributions, delivering a moving Spanish-language speech that celebrated his family and Bronx community ties.

Broadcasting legends John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman were celebrated for their enduring service to baseball, while Hall of Famer Dave Winfield received the prestigious Willie, Mickey, and the Duke Award. Winfield’s entertaining recollections of his historic 1984 batting title race against Don Mattingly captivated the audience.

Bronx-born comedian Tracy Morgan brought levity to the proceedings as Judge’s stand-in, accepting the MVP trophy with a blend of humor and hometown pride. Morgan’s reminiscences about his childhood near Yankee Stadium and early baseball heroes like Mickey Rivers resonated with the gathering.

Yankees’ future takes shape

As the 2025 season approaches, Judge’s leadership remains central to the Yankees’ aspirations. The organization has demonstrated aggressive intent during the offseason, securing the services of ace pitcher Max Fried, former National League MVPs Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger, and premier reliever Devin Williams. These strategic additions underscore the team’s commitment to securing their 28th World Series championship.

Judge’s transition to fatherhood adds an intriguing dimension to his already compelling narrative. The challenge of balancing team leadership with family responsibilities looms large, but those familiar with Judge’s character express unwavering confidence in his ability to excel in both arenas.

A Yankees insider recently highlighted Judge’s exceptional character, suggesting that his approaching role as a father would likely showcase the same dedication and excellence that have defined his professional career.

Celebration meets new beginnings

The BBWAA dinner served as a powerful reminder of baseball’s enduring capacity to unite and inspire. While the physical absence of Judge and Ohtani was felt, their recorded messages and the presence of numerous baseball luminaries ensured the evening’s success.

For Judge, the celebration marked both a professional pinnacle and a personal threshold. As he and Samantha prepare for parenthood, the Yankees’ leader stands ready to embrace his most significant role yet.

With spring training on the horizon, Yankees faithful eagerly anticipate Judge’s return to the diamond, where he’ll guide a reinforced roster toward championship glory. And now, more than ever, he’ll have an extra special supporter watching from the stands.
