Luis Gil’s award solidifies his place in the Yankees’ history books, joining notable past winners like Aaron Judge (2017) and Derek Jeter (1996). The Yankees’ track record of developing top rookie talent now spans over seven decades, with Gil’s achievement adding to a legacy that includes Thurman Munson, Dave Righetti, and other standout names.

After debuting with six starts in 2021, Luis Gil’s career was interrupted by injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2022 that sidelined him for two full seasons. Returning to the mound in 2024, the right-hander delivered a standout performance, posting a 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA across 151.2 innings. His 171 strikeouts underscored his ability to dominate hitters, featuring a powerful fastball and a sharp changeup.

Luis Gil’s performance was instrumental in the Yankees’ postseason run, helping the team advance to the World Series for the first time since 2009. Although the Yankees lost the series in five games to the Dodgers, Gil’s contributions throughout the season positioned him as a key part of the team’s success.

At 26 years old, Luis Gil is under contract with the Yankees through the 2028 season. His Rookie of the Year win caps a year of both personal and team milestones, with the pitcher now expected to remain a central figure in the Yankees’ rotation as the team aims to build on its 2024 success.
