Frigid Weather forces Yankees-Tigers series into day games at Comerica Park

First pitch is now set for 3:10 p.m. on Monday, followed by 1:10 p.m. starts on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the Tigers, the decision was made in response to forecasts predicting rain and snow showers on Monday, with wind chills in the 20s during the evening hours. Tuesday is shaping up to be the coldest of the three days, with a high of just 41 degrees and wind gusts reaching up to 21 mph, per the National Weather Service.
“We’re going to walk into a very cold Detroit,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday morning at PNC Park, where the team wrapped up a dreary weekend series against the Pirates. “Anything to take that edge off a little bit makes a ton of sense. And the Wednesday into an off day — to have the day game, definitely on board with that.”
The Yankees have already battled through some brisk conditions during their season-opening homestand in the Bronx and again in Pittsburgh, but the upcoming series in Detroit could present their toughest test yet in terms of weather. Boone acknowledged that playing through tough conditions is simply part of the game, especially in April.
“We’re more of a summer game,” Boone added, “but that’s part of the game too — especially in April in the Northeast and the Midwest. You got to deal with the elements some. It’s the same for both clubs, and it’s a little more challenging, but one you got to be ready for and hopefully we’re equipped for it.”
Chilly April games are nothing new in Detroit, but the combination of precipitation and plummeting temperatures led to concerns over player safety and performance — particularly for pitchers and hitters who rely heavily on grip and feel.
The Yankees will head into the Detroit series having won back-to-back games against the Pirates, fueled in part by a red-hot Trent Grisham, who hit two home runs in Saturday’s victory. Meanwhile, rookie Ben Rice continues to impress after a strong spring training, carrying his momentum into the early weeks of the regular season.
Detroit’s Spencer Torkelson and the rest of the Tigers lineup will also have to contend with the cold, likely resulting in low-scoring affairs if the conditions live up to forecasts. The Tigers, like the Yankees, are adjusting on the fly and preparing for what’s expected to be a challenging three-game set — now under the sun rather than the lights.
While day games won’t eliminate the chill, they at least provide a better environment than nighttime temperatures dipping below freezing. For both teams, it’s an early-season test of grit and adaptability — and for the Yankees, an opportunity to keep their momentum rolling despite the weather.
The shift also gives the Yankees a slightly more favorable schedule ahead of their off day on Thursday, allowing for more recovery time before their next series.
