NEW YORK — A postseason lineup decision exposed a problem the Yankees cannot ignore when they begin reshaping their infield for 2027. Ryan McMahon, acquired to stabilize third base, was no longer assured of a starting spot when the games became most important.

New York entered October with questions about its offense and finished its season with another early exit. The Tampa Bay Rays swept the Yankees in the American League Division Series, winning the decisive third game 4-3 at Yankee Stadium on Oct. 7. The defeat shifted attention to the players Brian Cashman can count on next season.

McMahon remains under contract through 2027. His glove still gives New York a dependable option at the hot corner, but his performance at the plate complicates the decision. The Yankees need more offense without sacrificing infield defense, particularly with other positions unsettled.

That creates a roster problem larger than one player. Cashman must decide whether to ride with a known major leaguer, pursue a trade or take a chance on an international hitter whose production has yet to be tested against MLB pitching.

The most intriguing name in that last category has emerged from Japan, where a 27-year-old has finished a historic offensive season and attracted attention from multiple American clubs.

Japanese Triple Crown winner presents Yankees with another option

Teruaki Sato, the Hanshin Tigers third baseman, won the 2026 Central League Triple Crown by hitting .306 with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs. He also posted a .991 OPS and scored 100 runs. He is the first Hanshin player to capture the Triple Crown and the ninth player to do so in league history.

Sato followed his 2025 Central League MVP season, when he hit 40 home runs and drove in 102 runs, with another year as a premier run producer. Across six NPB seasons, he has totaled 163 homers and 518 RBIs.

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman has identified the Yankees, Mets, Phillies and Dodgers as potential destinations if Hanshin makes Sato available through the posting system. That is a list of possible fits, not evidence of a Yankees offer or negotiations.

Sato has primarily played third base in Japan. He also has experience at first base and in right field, including an outfield role for Japan at the 2026 World Baseball Classic. His flexibility expands the number of possible roster arrangements for an interested MLB club.

A broadcaster identifies the tools that could translate

SNY analyst Dani Wexelman discussed Sato after seeing him in Japan and highlighted both the ease of his power and his ability to move around the diamond. Her comments centered on the profile he could bring to an American lineup.

“First of all, he can play multiple positions. He has a ton of power,” Wexelman said.

She also emphasized that his production is not restricted to pulled fly balls, an important distinction for clubs assessing how a Japanese hitter might adjust to major league parks.

“He has, as you can see, very easy power, opposite field power,” Wexelman said.

The posted discussion treated an eventual move as an expectation rather than a completed transaction. Any MLB agreement would first require Hanshin to post Sato and an interested team to reach terms within the applicable negotiating window.

McMahon comparison reveals the Yankees’ real gamble

McMahon finished the 2026 regular season with a .213 average, 11 homers, 41 RBIs and a .635 OPS in 328 at-bats. His six-year, $70 million contract runs through 2027, leaving the Yankees with a financial commitment even if they consider another third baseman.

Sato’s 39 NPB home runs exceeded McMahon’s MLB total by 28. His 106 RBIs were 65 higher. Those differences illustrate the contrasting offensive seasons, not an expectation that Sato would immediately reproduce his Japanese numbers in MLB.

There is a substantial adjustment risk. Sato struck out 164 times in 614 plate appearances in 2026, a 26.7% strikeout rate. In comparison, his 68 walks represented an 11.1% walk rate. Those figures point to exceptional impact power alongside a swing-and-miss question that major league evaluators would have to address.

The recent transition of another Japanese slugger offers both encouragement and caution. Munetaka Murakami, now with the Chicago White Sox, hit 35 home runs but batted .207 in his first MLB season in 2026. NPB achievements alone do not determine immediate major league results.

Cashman faces a posting decision beyond his control

For now, the Yankees cannot simply make Sato an unrestricted free-agent offer. Hanshin controls whether he enters the MLB posting process. Reports have pointed to a possible early-November posting, but an official move is still necessary.

Cashman also has to weigh the effect of another left-handed bat, how Sato would fit alongside existing infielders and whether McMahon could be moved or retained for defense and depth. Third base is a clear point of comparison, but the Japanese star’s experience elsewhere gives any eventual buyer alternatives.

The Mets have been discussed as another New York destination, adding an obvious competitive dimension if Sato reaches the market. Still, there is no verified bidding contest, no reported Yankees offer and no completed posting as of Oct. 11.

The Yankees enter the offseason with McMahon on the roster and Sato still with Hanshin. Whether those circumstances change depends first on a decision in Japan and then on how aggressively Cashman pursues another infield bat.
