TAMPA, Fla. — The Yankees are headed back to Arizona for spring baseball, something they have not done in three quarters of a century. Major League Baseball released the 2026 spring training schedule on Thursday, confirming the Yankees will play 33 exhibition games and finish their spring slate with two contests in Mesa, Arizona. The trip west marks their first spring appearance in the state since 1951.
The Yankees have held their spring headquarters in Florida for decades, operating out of George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Their annual routines involve Grapefruit League competition, short travel distances and a loyal fan presence that fills the ballpark every year. The visit to Arizona brings a new chapter to a long spring tradition, but without changing the team’s Tampa home base.
Historic trip concludes spring schedule

The Yankees will end their 2026 spring schedule with a two game set against the Chicago Cubs at Sloan Park in Mesa on March 23 and March 24. Sloan Park is the modern spring home of the Cubs and is considered one of the premier venues in the Cactus League.

This marks the Yankees’ first spring appearance in Arizona since 1951. The only time the Yankees previously trained in the state was under a unique arrangement involving a temporary camp swap with the New York Giants, who were still based at the Polo Grounds before moving to San Francisco. For one spring, the Yankees shifted to Phoenix while the Giants trained in St. Petersburg, Florida.
That 1951 spring training is etched into Yankees history for another reason. It was Joe DiMaggio’s final spring preparing for a season in pinstripes and Mickey Mantle’s first. Those weeks represented the passing of a torch from one Yankees legend to the next, marking a generational shift that shaped the team’s future.
The Yankees have not returned to Arizona for spring games since that moment.
Traditional Florida base remains unchanged
Arizona will host only the final two games of spring training. Tampa remains the heart of the Yankees’ operation. The team will begin its 2026 schedule on Feb. 20 with a road game against the division rival Baltimore Orioles. The first home date at Steinbrenner Field comes the following day, Feb. 21, when Detroit visits.
Overall, the Yankees will play 16 games at Steinbrenner Field and 17 on the road. The schedule includes several weekend dates, with eight of their home games falling on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. Weekend dates typically draw larger crowds and create an energetic environment for fans eager to see returning stars and emerging prospects.
While the spring routine stays familiar in Florida, the Arizona trip adds a new level of anticipation to the final days of camp.
AL East battles highlight schedule
The Yankees will not ease their way into the competitive mindset. Spring training includes divisional opponents from the American League East. New York will face Baltimore and Toronto four times each. The Yankees will play Boston and Tampa Bay twice apiece.
These matchups serve an early preview of rivalries that fuel the regular season. The Orioles begin and end the Yankees spring slate in Florida, creating repeat matchups that allow fans to watch lineup decisions and pitching plans evolve.
These games carry no standings implications, but they help molding player readiness and roster evaluation.
International exhibition adds variety
The Yankees will host Team Panama at Steinbrenner Field on March 3. The game connects to events surrounding the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Team Panama will play several exhibitions in preparation for the global tournament.
Hosting an international opponent brings a different style of play into spring competition. It also gives fans a chance to see international talent in one of baseball’s most familiar ballparks.
MLB’s increased inclusion of international exhibitions reflects the sport’s goal to expand global reach and grow the game beyond North America.
Development opportunities on tap

One of the most anticipated parts of the schedule arrives on March 21, when the Yankees participate in MLB’s Spring Breakout showcase. This event will feature prospects from both the Yankees and the Atlanta Braves organizations. It will be held at Steinbrenner Field.
Spring Breakout is designed to highlight minor league talent and help front offices evaluate how young players perform in a major league setting. Fans see top prospects who might become household names in the months ahead. It serves as a competitive and developmental stepping stone.
The Yankees system includes several highly regarded prospects, including Spencer Jones, whose combination of size and power has gained national attention. Spring Breakout gives players like Jones a chance to face future big league pitching in a competitive environment.
Split squad arrangements
The Yankees will play split squad games on March 15 and March 19. On those dates, the team divides into two groups playing in different locations at the same time. Coaches use these days to evaluate roster depth and give more players game reps.
Split squad days allow fans in multiple cities to watch Yankees players in action. For the coaching staff and front office, the days offer expanded evaluation time. It also helps players fighting for roster spots show what they can do against major league competition.
Final Florida homestand
The Yankees will play their final home game in Tampa on March 22 against the Philadelphia Phillies. The game closes their Florida portion of the schedule. After the game, the Yankees will head to Arizona to prepare for the final two contests.
Fans in Tampa get one final chance to see the roster before the season begins. By that point, lineup battles and bullpen competitions are usually close to resolution.
Breaking new ground in 2026
The Yankees’ spring trip to Arizona does not replace their Florida tradition. It adds another layer to how the team prepares for Opening Day. Different ballparks, different weather conditions and different opponents create an environment that encourages adaptation as camp comes to an end.
The trip also marks a symbolic moment. The Yankees have always maintained tradition, but this schedule shows their willingness to adjust when needed. It also gives fans in the Southwest region a rare opportunity to watch the Yankees without traveling across the country.
Thirty three exhibition games will create evaluation opportunities, competition and storylines. The Arizona trip adds a historic note to the finish.
The Yankees will continue to train in Tampa. They will continue to draw large crowds at Steinbrenner Field. But for the first time in 75 years, they will finish spring training under the desert sun.
