A few months ago, the Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman explored acquiring right-hander Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers at the 2024 trade deadline, but talks reportedly stalled over concerns about a back injury, which Cashman later denied. Instead, Flaherty ended up with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played a role in their postseason run. Now, as Flaherty hits free agency, speculation suggests the Yankees may re-evaluate the 28-year-old as a potential rotation addition.
Could the Yankees target Jack Flaherty again this offseason?
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Flaherty’s market is expected to be competitive, with the Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers all rumored to be potential suitors. Flaherty posted a career-high 162 innings in 2024, marking his most durable season in five years and registering an impressive 5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Passan notes that while Flaherty might not secure a $100 million deal, his strong performance this season could elevate him into a higher price bracket.
“Flaherty could make sense. And the Yankees — who killed a deal for Flaherty at the trade deadline out of concerns about his back — could be in again.” Said Jeff Fassan on Tuesday.
In addition to traditional suitors, the Washington Nationals have emerged as a surprise candidate. With a young core and an eye toward building a competitive rotation, Washington may look to Flaherty as a stabilizing presence without committing to a high-priced ace. Passan compared a possible Nationals move for Flaherty to the Orioles’ acquisition of Corbin Burnes last offseason, noting a similar potential impact on a developing roster.
The Yankees, meanwhile, face mounting pressure to solidify their rotation after a season marked by injuries and inconsistency. Adding a proven right-hander like Flaherty could offer the team reliable depth behind their top starters, addressing an area that has hampered their recent playoff aspirations. Flaherty’s blend of experience and durability could make him an appealing option, although his injury history will likely remain a key consideration.
Cashman and the Yankees front office are expected to closely monitor Flaherty’s market as the offseason unfolds, weighing the potential rewards against his health history. A structured contract might appeal to New York, allowing the team to add Flaherty’s experience without significant financial risk. As Passan reported, Flaherty’s free-agent pursuit could turn into a bidding battle, with his recent performance and potential ceiling enticing multiple contenders.
Whether Cashman will renew his interest in Flaherty could depend on several factors, including Flaherty’s medical evaluations and the financial competition from other teams. The Yankees’ decision may come down to whether Flaherty’s risk profile aligns with their offseason priorities, but his availability ensures he’ll remain on their radar as they seek to bolster the rotation for 2025.
