Rookie catcher Austin Wells made history for the New York Yankees during their postseason game against the Cleveland Guardians. According to Sarah Langs of MLB.com, Wells became the first Yankees rookie catcher to hit a home run in the playoffs. The historic home run came in the second inning, contributing to the Yankees’ early lead.

As previously said, Austin Wells made Yankees history on Friday night, becoming the first rookie catcher in franchise history to hit a postseason home run. His crucial solo blast in the fourth inning helped power the Yankees to a dramatic 8-6 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, moving New York within one win of the World Series.

The Yankees wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in Game 4 of the ALCS. In the first inning, Juan Soto delivered a two-run home run off Guardians starter Gavin Williams, crushing a 3-1 pitch deep into right field to give New York an early 2-0 lead. Soto’s blast electrified the Yankee Stadium crowd and established momentum for the Bronx Bombers, who were eager to bounce back from a tough Game 3 loss.

However, Cleveland quickly responded, cutting the lead to 2-1 in the second inning. Despite the pressure, the Yankees regained control when Wells launched his historic home run in the fourth, restoring New York’s lead to 3-1. Wells had sat out the previous game, making his return to the lineup even more impactful as his homer gave the Yankees the cushion they needed to settle into the game.

The Yankees’ offensive surge didn’t stop there. In the sixth inning, Giancarlo Stanton, continuing his October dominance, smashed a three-run home run to extend the lead to 6-2. It was Stanton’s fourth home run of the postseason, further cementing his role as a key contributor in the Yankees’ playoff push.

But Cleveland, known for its resilience, refused to go quietly. The Guardians rallied in the seventh inning, and a pair of doubles from José Ramírez and Josh Naylor cut the Yankees’ lead to 6-5. In the eighth, an infield error by Yankees pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. allowed the Guardians to tie the game, sending waves of tension through the stadium.

The Yankees, however, responded in the ninth inning. After Anthony Rizzo’s single and a crucial base hit by Anthony Volpe put runners on the corners, shortstop Brayan Rocchio’s error on a grounder from Alex Verdugo allowed the go-ahead run to score. Gleyber Torres followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 8-6.

Closer Tommy Kahnle was called upon to finish the game, and though the Guardians threatened with two baserunners, Kahnle managed to escape, inducing a groundout from Rocchio to secure the Yankees’ hard-fought win.

With the victory, New York takes a commanding 3-1 lead in the American League Championship Series and now sits just one win away from its 41st World Series appearance. They will have the opportunity to clinch the series in Game 5, set for Saturday night in Cleveland, with ace Carlos Rodón taking the mound. For the Guardians, facing elimination, the challenge will be daunting, but they’ve shown they won’t go down without a fight.

As the Yankees inch closer to the Fall Classic, contributions from key players like Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton, and the history-making Austin Wells will be crucial to their continued success.
