For the second consecutive year, a Yankees outfield prospect requires surgery on his UCL. Everson Pereira will be sidelined for the rest of the season at Triple-A to undergo an internal brace surgery on his elbow, a source confirmed to SNY on Friday.

What happened?

Everson Pereira was batting .265 with 10 home runs and a .859 OPS at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.

On Friday, Andy Martino of SNY reported that it was an elbow injury that took Pereira out for the season.

A day earlier, Pinstripes Nation reported that Everson Pereira would miss the rest of the season due to an injury, but did not specify the nature of the injury.

According to Martino, a source familiar with the situation stated that Everson Pereira will undergo an internal brace procedure, a newer modification of Tommy John surgery that requires a somewhat shorter recovery time.

Jasson Dominguez, another Yankees‘ outfield prospect who, like Pereira, made his MLB debut last year, underwent the same procedure last September. The Yankees activated Dominguez from the injured list last week and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton.

Everson Pereira, 23, struggled during his call-up last year, with 14 hits in 93 at-bats. However, he is still rated by MLB Pipeline as the Yankees’ fifth-best prospect and posted an .859 OPS at Triple-A this year.

Despite his promising future, the expectation was that he would return in 2024. However, with this new injury, the prediction is that he may not be ready until 2025.

With a crowded Yankees outfield, Everson Pereira might have been a valuable trade chip at the deadline next month, when the team will seek bullpen and possibly infield help.

Pereira should be ready by Spring Training, so with the ability to trade guys on the IL now, I can’t see why a guy like him couldn’t be a 3rd piece in any deal.
