PHILADELPHIA — It took one swing in the first inning to keep the Yankees out of a piece of history that had waited more than six decades.
The Yankees beat the Phillies 3-1 on Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park, claiming the series with a third straight win. Austin Wells and Jasson Dominguez homered, and the bullpen slammed the door once again.
The victory followed the same script that has carried this team for a week. Pitch deep, get just enough offense and let the back end of the staff finish. The formula has masked a lineup that keeps sputtering.
There was tension all night, but not the usual kind. The drama was less about whether the Yankees would win and more about a streak the pitching staff had quietly put within reach.
That streak ended almost as soon as it started, before most fans in the ballpark realized it was alive.
A first-inning run erases a shot at history
The Yankees had thrown back-to-back shutouts entering Saturday. A third in a row would have been their first such run since June 6 through 8, 1962, a span of 64 years. Philadelphia had one chance to stop it, and took it in the opening frame.
Trea Turner was hit by a pitch to lead off. Kyle Schwarber followed with a double. Bryce Harper then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Turner. That single run was all the Phillies would manage, and it was enough to deny the Yankees the rare feat.
Left-hander Ryan Weathers gave up that run and nothing else. He settled in immediately, striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings while scattering six hits and a walk. Weathers leaned on his offspeed pitches and largely shelved his four-seam fastball.
The outing pushed the Yankees pitching staff to the front of a strange stretch. New York had allowed no more than one run in three consecutive games while the bats stayed cold.
Run prevention keeps carrying a quiet lineup
The theme of the week was not lost on manager Aaron Boone. His team has leaned on pitching and defense to survive an offense that has gone silent for stretches, and he framed that balance plainly after the win.
“We have different ways of beating you, but the biggest thing that’s kept us in there is the run prevention side,” Boone said. “That’s allowed us to hang in there as we’ve gone through some struggles offensively.”
Weathers pointed to a specific adjustment that helped him keep the Phillies off balance. He said the plan was to change eye levels and attack the top of the zone more often than usual.
“We added some more four-seamers at the top to change some eye levels, and we were executing pitches at a pretty high rate tonight,” Weathers said.
The left-hander also credited the arms behind him, a group that has turned late leads into routine wins throughout the surge.
“The bullpen has been phenomenal,” Weathers added. “As starters, we just keep the team in the game, knowing we have a really good bullpen right now. They came in and closed it out tonight.”
Two swings and a lockdown bullpen decide it
The offense may be scuffling, but it delivered at the right moments. Wells launched the longest home run of his career, an opposite-field drive measured at 430 feet, off Phillies opener-turned-reliever Brian Keller in the third. It was a rare loud night for a catcher who has struggled all season.
Wells later came around to score the go-ahead run in the sixth on a Cody Bellinger single. Dominguez then added insurance in the seventh with a solo shot off left-hander Jose Alvarado, his seventh homer of the year and his second off a lefty.
From there the bullpen took over. Angel Chivilli, Paul Blackburn and David Bednar combined for scoreless relief, with Bednar working a perfect ninth for his 20th save. He has now retired hitters for 23 2/3 straight scoreless innings and has converted 10 consecutive chances.
The win also produced a franchise first. According to research from analyst Katie Sharp, it was the first time in Yankees history the club won three straight games while scoring six or fewer runs and collecting 15 or fewer hits across the span. The number captures the season in miniature: elite arms, missing bats.
A costly injury clouds the celebration
The night was not all good news. Bellinger, who delivered the tiebreaking hit in the sixth, appeared to injure his left hamstring on a hustle double in the eighth. He was removed from the game afterward, and the Yankees offered no immediate word on the severity.
Losing Bellinger would sting for a team already thin on healthy, productive bats. He has been one of the few Yankees hitters providing all-around value, and any absence would fall on a lineup that ranks near the bottom of the majors in on-base percentage over the past month.
The victory kept the Yankees at 59-45, second in the American League East and two games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. The pitching has bought the front office time as the Aug. 3 trade deadline nears, with catcher and bullpen help still on the wish list.
New York goes for a sweep on Sunday night with Will Warren on the mound. The Yankees will again ask their arms to cover for an offense still waiting to wake up, the same bargain that has defined this stretch.
