Several teams are expressing interest in Jordan Montgomery, but the New York Yankees appear to be leading the way in securing a reunion with the pitcher. The Yankees are actively seeking to strengthen their starting rotation, which has faced challenges due to injuries and free agency.

“The Yankees will stay in the market for affordable pitching options even if they sign Yamamoto,” according to Ken_Rosenthal, “They’ve discussed a reunion with Jordan Montgomery at least internally.”

Montgomery kicked off his professional journey with the New York Yankees, where he spent five seasons from 2017 to 2022. In his last complete season with the team, he posted a 6-7 record with a 3.83 ERA, accumulating 157.1 innings. However, during the midway point of the 2022 season, Montgomery was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Montgomery caught Yankees’ attention with comeback in Texas

During the offseason, there have been consistent rumors connecting Jordan Montgomery to a potential reunion with the Yankees. The Bombers find themselves in a situation where they require additional starting pitchers, particularly given the shortage of reliable options in the rotation after Gerrit Cole. While there are ongoing negotiations to secure Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto for a significant contract, insider Ken Rosenthal reports that the Yankees will continue to pursue Jordan Montgomery, emphasizing their commitment to strengthening the pitching staff, even if they successfully sign Yamamoto.

According to reports, Jordan Montgomery’s representatives are using Carlos Rodon‘s recent six-year, $162 million deal with the Yankees as a benchmark for negotiations. While Montgomery may not boast the accolades of a Cy Young contender or an All-Star, he brings a valuable asset to the table—a World Series title.

Montgomery played a crucial role in the Texas Rangers’ championship victory this season. Comparing this to Carlos Rodon’s contract, which amounted to $27 million per year, despite his less impressive recent performance on the mound, suggests that the Yankees might be willing to offer a similar deal to the left-handed pitcher.

Both pitchers are of similar age, and it’s likely that Montgomery’s team will seek to negotiate a long-term contract in the vicinity of that amount.
