Amidst a season filled with moments of struggle, the Yankees managed to reach a new low as they suffered an 8-3 defeat against the Red Sox. It extended the losing streak to six games — marking their longest slump of the season — and sank them to the lowest point yet with a record that is now two games below .500.

Friday’s game, despite the urgency to arrest the slide, was without any effort by the Yankees to turn the tide. Rather there was pitching failure, offensive meltdown, and defensive errors. Irate fans at Yankee Stadium echoed with a mixture of groans as the Red Sox began to take Jhony Brito to the task. A feeling of collective resignation seemed to be spreading as the game progressed. The frustration was evident with boos raining down as the score gap widened.

Amidst the unfolding events, a somewhat ironic round of applause erupted when the Yankees finally secured an out. However, the prevailing sound was one of quiet resignation, painting a picture of the overall sentiment. While there were sporadic bursts of cheers when offensive potential surfaced belatedly and the expected jeers indicated that the overarching atmosphere was marked by a sense of acceptance in stark contrast to the team’s apparent optimism. This prevailing sense of realism seemed to underline the night, as the 44,566 spectators grappled with the realization that the season’s fate might have been sealed well before September, let alone October.

With the Yankees now trailing by seven games in the AL wild-card race, the challenge of making it to the playoffs looms ever larger. Manager Aaron Boone expressed frustration and disappointment, acknowledging the challenges faced by his 60-62 club. He emphasized the importance of resisting the pull of frustration and striving to address the issues at hand on a daily basis.

Brito blew out early, Yankees’ errors aided it

After a challenging road trip spanning Chicago, Miami, and Atlanta, the Yankees returned home with high hopes. However, they found their rhythm only later in the match.

The game didn’t start well for Jhony Brito, as the first three batters in the Red Sox lineup hit the ball hard, resulting in hits and a 1-0 lead for Boston. There were also communication issues between Brito and catcher Ben Rortvedt, possibly due to PitchCom malfunctioning. Although they appeared to address the issue, the very next pitch, a 1-0 changeup that missed its mark, was hammered by Masataka Yoshida over the right field wall for a 376-foot home run, extending Boston’s lead to 4-0.

Following the initial inning, an announcement was made that the PitchCom system was malfunctioning, leading both teams to refrain from using it during Friday’s game.

The second inning didn’t bring any relief for Brito, and his defense didn’t lend much support either. With one out and the bases empty, Gleyber Torres struggled with the ground ball exchange, resulting in an error and allowing a runner to reach. The Red Sox capitalized on this opportunity, stringing together four consecutive singles to score three additional runs.

By the time only four batters had come to the plate for the Red Sox in the second inning, they had already secured a 4-0 lead. The last of these batters, Masataka Yoshida, hammered a three-run home run on the first pitch he received from Brito, following a lengthy delay caused by the PitchCom issue.

In the second inning, the Red Sox added three additional runs to their tally, capitalizing on an error and a string of four consecutive singles. The sequence kicked off with Pablo Reyes hitting a sharply hit grounder to Gleyber Torres at second base. Although Torres initially made a good stop, he encountered difficulty while attempting to make the throw to first, resulting in a fumble behind him. Following this mishap, four consecutive singles ensued, driving the Yankees’ deficit to 7-0.

Unfortunately for Brito, his time on the mound was short-lived. He threw 46 pitches across 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs (with six being earned) on nine hits. He did not issue any walks and managed to record one strikeout during his outing.

Judge tried to set things right but the Yankees lost

Having fallen behind by four runs in the opening inning and trailing by a substantial margin of seven runs after the second, the Yankees struggled to generate momentum. Their offense displayed a spark only in the eighth inning when Aaron Judge‘s two-run homer provided a glimmer of hope.

Aaron Judge marked his return to The Stadium from the injured list by hitting his first home run since his comeback, a two-run shot in the eighth inning that narrowed the score to 7-3. Prior to this, his previous home run in the Bronx had been on May 28.

In the ninth inning, the Yankees managed to get their first two batters on base, but they were unable to capitalize and left them stranded.

In previous years, there were instances where the Yankees’ offense responded to early setbacks by launching comebacks, sparking rallies, and making the games more closely contested. However, this season is not following that pattern. Over their last four games, the Yankees have managed to score just a combined six runs.

Anthony Volpe, a standout performer amidst the challenges, expressed the team’s recognition that they haven’t lived up to their potential throughout the entire year. But he had a productive outing on Friday, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run. LeMahieu also contributed with a 2-for-4 performance, scoring a run and driving in another. His hitting streak now stands at ten consecutive games.

Why Pitchcom was not allowed to the Yankees

The most recent disappointment commenced with a mixture of technical glitches and other underlying factors.

Brito and Rortvedt struggled to sync up their communication in the opening inning due to the sudden revelation just before the game that Boston’s PitchCom system was malfunctioning. Nonetheless, manager Aaron Boone intervened once more by attributing the issue to the unavailability of the PitchCom system.

In the interest of maintaining fairness, MLB prohibited both teams from utilizing the device.

“Curious timing,” remarked Boone, and both he and Rortvedt hinted at the challenges of swiftly adapting to the unexpected need for using hand signals.

The PitchCom system was introduced to the league in 2022 as a proactive measure by MLB to prevent sign-stealing incidents. Following the infamous Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, the league aimed to avert such controversies in the future. During the 2017 season, the Astros’ team was found guilty of illicitly observing opposing pitchers’ signals using cameras positioned behind the mound. This information was then relayed to the dugout, aiding batters in anticipating the upcoming pitch type.

To address these concerns, MLB introduced PitchCom—an electronic device worn by pitchers and catchers to communicate their pitch selection. This innovation has proven effective, reducing the time between pitches and minimizing opportunities for sign-stealing.

However, like any technological system, it is not devoid of glitches. On Friday night, it was the Boston Red Sox who experienced PitchCom issues that prevented them from utilizing the system. Subsequently, MLB approached the Yankees with a request to refrain from using the technology due to concerns about potential unfair advantages. According to manager Aaron Boone, the Yankees were informed of this matter just moments before the start of the game.

Amidst the mound conferences to deliberate on pitch signals, Brito faced a barrage of hits.

The Yankees’ bullpen played a crucial role in keeping them in contention, led by Ian Hamilton‘s career-high 3 ²/₃ innings of scoreless performance. However, the offense, despite amassing 10 hits against Brayan Bello—who pitched for six innings—and Boston’s bullpen, failed to rally back, further compounding their predicament.

Rortvedt noted that the atmosphere in the clubhouse isn’t exactly positive and the team isn’t acting carefree. He emphasized that everyone is arriving with a serious intent to put in the effort. The players are highly focused and committed, all eagerly anticipating the moment when they can reverse the current situation.
