Yankees rush Max Fried back, but it starts another problem immediately

NEW YORK — The rain that wiped out Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium did the Yankees a favor and handed them a problem in the same stroke. By the time the tarp came off, the plan the club had spent weeks building was gone.

Hours earlier, Aaron Boone had laid out the careful version. One more minor league tuneup. A return next week in Chicago. Nothing rushed.

That plan lasted until the evening.

What the Yankees announced instead was the kind of decision a contender makes when the schedule stops cooperating.

The Yankees scrapped Max Fried‘s second rehab start and will activate the left-hander to start Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Pirates, more than two months after he last pitched in the majors.

A plan undone by the weather

The organizational script had Fried making a second rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, with a possible third to follow early next week. Boone said as much Tuesday, describing a roughly 60-pitch outing in the minors before Fried rejoined the rotation during the White Sox series.

Tuesday’s postponement forced a second doubleheader in three days and left the Yankees short an arm. Without Fried, they faced a choice between a bullpen game and handing the ball to a struggling starter.

Neither option appealed. Will Warren, who had been lined up for Tuesday, carries a 5.56 ERA over his last seven starts. So the Yankees took the pitches Fried was going to throw in Scranton and moved them to the Bronx.

Gerrit Cole will start the opener at 1:05 p.m. against Mitch Keller, with Fried facing Bubba Chandler in the nightcap at 7:05 p.m.

Sixty pitches, and then what

The catch is that Fried arrives on a pitch count near 60, which turns a celebrated return into an immediate strain on a bullpen that is already worn down.

The math is unforgiving. A 60-pitch limit typically buys three innings, maybe four if the traffic stays light. That leaves five or six innings for a relief corps that has been leaned on hard all week.

The bullpen was already taxed by Sunday’s doubleheader against the Dodgers, when five relievers covered nine innings in the nightcap. Monday brought more work after Ryan Weathers lasted just 4 2/3 innings against Pittsburgh.

Now the same group must cover the back half of a nine-inning game hours after working the opener. One option floated is piggybacking Warren behind Fried, using the man who lost his start as a bulk reliever.

Fried is not stretched out. He threw 52 pitches in his lone rehab start Friday, allowing two runs on five hits over three innings with three strikeouts and no walks. It will likely take him about five starts to build back to a full workload, and the Yankees have chosen to do that building in the majors.

What the Yankees are getting back

The upside is real. Before the injury, Fried was 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and 50 strikeouts against 19 walks over 61 2/3 innings in 10 starts. Opponents hit just .199 against him.

That followed a first season in pinstripes in which he went 19-5 with a 2.86 ERA across 32 starts and finished fourth in AL Cy Young voting after signing an eight-year, $218 million contract.

Fried last pitched May 13 in Baltimore, leaving after three innings with elbow discomfort. He described the injury in plain terms when it happened, and said he was not worried about the long term.

Fried called it a hyperextension of the elbow and “the banging of the two bones back there.”

Wednesday also delivers a milestone the Yankees have waited nearly two years to see. It will be the first time Fried and Cole are on the active roster together, and they will pitch on the same day. Cole missed all of 2025 recovering from Tommy John surgery and returned May 22, about a week after Fried went down.

A rotation nearly whole, a race that will not wait

The Yankees enter the doubleheader at 56-44, 1.5 games behind the Rays in the AL East, and would hold the top American League wild card if the season ended now.

They have treaded water at 21-21 since Aaron Judge last played May 31, and a 10-game road trip against the Phillies, White Sox and Cubs begins Friday. Carlos Rodon, who received a second round of injections in his elbow, could return early next month.

A healthy group of Cam Schlittler, Cole, Fried, Rodon and one of Warren or Weathers would give the Yankees the rotation they envisioned in the offseason. Their starters already own a 3.63 ERA, fifth best in the majors.

Fried will not fix a lineup that has gone cold without Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. What he offers is length, eventually. On Wednesday night, the Yankees will get only a piece of him, and the bullpen will be asked to supply the rest.
