In a recent development, Anthony Rizzo of the New York Yankees has been placed on the injured list due to a concussion, and subsequent tests have revealed cognitive impairment. This news comes just before the Yankees’ game against the Astros, as confirmed by Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

The Yankees have confirmed that there was no concussion at the time of the collision, but Anthony Rizzo has recently experienced symptoms related to the incident. Subsequent tests revealed cognitive impairment.

During his press conference, Anthony Rizzo shared the timeline of his struggles since colliding with Fernando Tatís Jr. in May. He acknowledged that despite facing challenges in the game, he has enough experience to recognize signs of improvement usually appearing over time.

“I’ve struggled plenty in this game, but I’ve also done it for a long time to know that you usually come out and there’s signs of coming out”

The concussion is believed to have originated from a collision on May 28th when Anthony Rizzo was at first base and encountered Fernando Tatis Jr. from the Padres. During the play, Tatis’ hip made contact with Rizzo’s head as he caught a throw from the plate.

Although Rizzo passed the initial concussion protocol tests administered by MLB at the time of the injury, he has recently been experiencing brain fog, prompting the decision to place him on the injured list.

The Yankees are closely monitoring Anthony Rizzo’s condition on a “week-to-week” basis, during which Jake Bauers and DJ LeMahieu will take over first-base duties.

Anthony Rizzo’s performance prior to the injury had been remarkable, with a batting average of .304, an on-base percentage of .376, and a slugging percentage of .505. He had hit 11 home runs in the first 53 games of the season. However, his performance took a dip since June, with a .172 batting average, one home run, and 44 strikeouts in 46 games.

This situation adds to the Yankees’ challenges this season, as they work to navigate Anthony Rizzo’s absence and make necessary adjustments to maintain their performance. The impact of Anthony Rizzo’s absence will be closely observed as the team strives to adapt to this setback.
