Yankees fans mock the team brass for including Aaron Hicks in the playing lineup after he went public complaining about his lack of playtime. The player was subject to boos by the Bronx faithful every time he took to bat in his last two starts.
Aaron Hicks invited the wrath of fans
Aaron Hicks remains the least popular among Yankees fans. This led Joel Sherman of the New York Post to term him as their enemy No. 1 during the offseason.
On September 9, 2022, the crowd at Yankee Stadium turned hostile after Aaron Hicks was struck out and softly grounded. With two outs in the fourth inning, loud shouts erupted into cries of “Jo-ey, Gal-lo” after he made a pair of poor plays in left field. After Aaron Hicks dropped two balls in left field that turned into run-scoring doubles for Tampa Bay, the Yankees benched him in the midst of the fourth inning. The result was the Rays’ 4-2 victory over the Yankees.
Most Yankees fans already wanted to see Aaron Hicks leave the team. But they were even more upset when manager Aaron Boone said at a news conference over the weekend that the player had come to him to complain about not getting to play in the team’s home opener against the San Francisco Giants.
According to The New York Post, Boone told:
“(Hicks) is going to play. I would probably expect him to be in there the next couple of days.”
Aaron Hicks did start in left field for Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, just as Boone said he would. When Hicks’ name was called in the pregame lineup, New York Yankees fans booed loudly, and the boos got louder as Hicks went 0-for-4.
Fans slam Yankees team management
Boone had Aaron Hicks back in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Phillies, even though he had a bad game on Monday. Yankees fans are not happy, which is not a surprise. Many Yankees fans blame Boone for playing Aaron Hicks just as much as they blame Hicks for not doing well. Fans of the New York Yankees would love to see as many of their highly regarded prospects play as possible. Oswaldo Cabrera is a “super utility” player who fits right into this way of thinking. Now that Aaron Hicks is starting over Cabrera instead of the other way around, anger is once again starting to rise.
Will Aaron Hicks be there?
For a team like the Yankees that always wants to make the playoffs, Aaron Hicks’ situation has become very bad for the team and everyone around it. Hicks has never hit better than .230 in his career, but he hasn’t even done that since 2019.
From 2020 to 2022, he hit .225, .194, and .216, and since 2018, he hasn’t heard much other than boos. The 33-year-old had his best season ever, hitting .248 with 27 home runs. In the four years since then, he has only hit 30 home runs.
The worst news for the Yankees is that Aaron Hicks is under contract until 2025.
