The World Series at Yankee Stadium saw another fan-related incident in Game 5 as actor Wendell Pierce left early after enduring harassment from spectators. Pierce, known for his roles in “The Wire” and “Jack Ryan,” detailed on social media platform X how an exchange with a Dodgers fan led to a hostile reaction, with nearby Yankees fans throwing objects in his direction.
Starting the evening in high spirits behind home plate, decked out in Yankees gear, Pierce, 60, expressed disappointment over the incident, lamenting that it detracted from the game’s highlights. Currently starring in CBS’s “Elisabeth,” the actor noted that the unruly behavior tainted his appreciation of standout moments like Gerrit Cole’s five-inning no-hit bid and Freddie Freeman’s record-setting home run streak.
“Unruly, obnoxious people can ruin everything,” Pierce wrote about Yankees fans’ reactions. “The worst experience ever. The game and experience is of no significance now. The spirit of sports ends with the ugliness of humanity.”
“The fact that some suburban who ha’s [sic] come to Yankee stadium to act an ass, completely ruins the artistry of [Gerrit] Cole pitching a no hitter into the 5th, or [Freddie] Freeman with a 4 game consecutive home run streak: both in the World Series,” he added.” “It will mean nothing to me because all I remember will be the obnoxious fans I had to avoid.”
Pierce compared the night unfavorably to his experiences at the Olympic Games, where he felt athletic excellence was universally celebrated. Despite memorable moments, including Aaron Judge’s home run and masterful performances from Cole and Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty, Pierce said the disruptive environment left his World Series experience soured.
The incident followed another in Game 4, where Yankees fans Austin Capobianco and John Peter were ejected and banned from Game 5 after aggressively interfering with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts during play. The Yankees responded by reassigning their seats to a pediatric cancer patient.
Pierce’s early departure and subsequent posts underscore ongoing concerns about fan conduct at Yankee Stadium during the Series, suggesting the actions of a few fans are dampening the significance of this historic matchup.
