The baseball community witnessed another instance of roster rankings controversy as New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. expressed sharp disagreement with MLB Network’s annual Top 10 Shortstops Right Now compilation that excludes his teammate Anthony Volpe. The algorithmic rankings, generated by the network’s evaluation system The Shredder, sparked debate across the sport’s landscape.

The rankings positioned Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson at the summit, followed by Texas Rangers star Corey Seager and New York Mets fixture Francisco Lindor. Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. secured fourth place, while Mookie Betts of the Dodgers and Chicago Cubs’ Dansby Swanson claimed fifth and sixth respectively. Minnesota’s Carlos Correa, Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz, Milwaukee’s Willy Adames, and Philadelphia’s Trea Turner completed the top tier.

Wtf??

Chisholm’s response manifested as a succinct social media post expressing evident dissatisfaction, prompting widespread speculation regarding his specific objections.

Omission of Yankees’ Volpe sparks debate

Subsequent analysis suggested Chisholm’s displeasure centered on the exclusion of Yankees teammate Anthony Volpe from the elite rankings. Volpe, who entered the league in 2023, distinguished himself by securing a Gold Glove award in his inaugural season—an unprecedented achievement for a Yankees rookie.

Volpe’s 2023 rookie campaign produced mixed results: a .209 batting average, .666 OPS, complemented by 21 home runs, 60 RBIs, 24 stolen bases, and 23 doubles. His sophomore season saw modest offensive adjustments, registering .243/.293/.364, .657 OPS, 12 home runs, 60 RBIs, and 28 stolen bases. However, his postseason performance during the 2024 campaign showcased his potential, highlighted by a .287 average, .815 OPS, and a memorable grand slam during World Series Game 4 against Los Angeles.

Despite some struggles with power, Volpe’s progression from year one to year two is promising. The 2024 season marked a shift in his approach as he worked on reducing his strikeouts, moving away from a power-focused mentality to improving his contact rate. This change in approach is reflective of his growth as a hitter, even though it means some sacrifice in his power numbers, which he will continue to refine. Volpe’s performance in the postseason was a bright spot, as he hit .286/.407/.408 across 14 games, showing his ability to rise to the occasion against elite pitching.

While Volpe’s offense continues to evolve, his defense has already reached elite status. With a .972 fielding percentage, six defensive runs saved, and 15 outs above average in 2024, Volpe has cemented himself as one of the best defensive shortstops in the game. His exceptional range and instincts at shortstop provide the Yankees with a strong foundation on the field, even as his offensive game develops.

If Volpe can continue refining his approach at the plate, he has the potential to become one of the most well-rounded shortstops in baseball. His speed and ability to get on base could make him a dynamic leadoff option for the Yankees, and his offensive game, paired with his already elite defense, could allow him to fully unlock his potential as one of the team’s next stars. As the Yankees look to remain competitive, Volpe’s continued growth could make him a key contributor for years to come.

Chisholm’s advocacy for Volpe suggests recognition of untapped potential, though objective analysis indicates current offensive statistics place him outside immediate top-10 consideration.

Evaluating the rankings

The algorithmic selections generated expected debate, particularly regarding Bobby Witt Jr.’s fourth-place designation despite his runner-up finish in AL MVP voting. Additional controversy surrounded Elly De La Cruz’s inclusion following his rookie season, potentially at the expense of more established talents.

The rankings reflect unprecedented depth at shortstop. Henderson’s elevation follows a breakout 2024 campaign featuring a .301 average, 35 home runs, 95 RBIs, and .953 OPS while leading Baltimore’s ALCS run. Seager maintained elite offensive production following his 2023 World Series MVP performance, while Lindor continued combining defensive excellence with consistent power production.

Volpe’s current metrics, including an 18th-ranked OPS (.657) and 17th-ranked wRC+ among MLB shortstops, support his exclusion despite elite defensive contributions.

Volpe’s path forward

Projecting Volpe’s development suggests potential for elite status. His defensive excellence provides a foundation, while his power potential and baseball acumen indicate room for offensive growth. Consistent plate production remains the primary obstacle to top-10 consideration.

The Yankees organization maintains strong support for Volpe’s development trajectory. His projected role as starting shortstop in 2025 reflects organizational confidence in his continued evolution.

Volpe’s performance in the leadoff position could significantly impact team success in 2025. Strong individual results could simultaneously advance team objectives and strengthen his position among elite shortstops.

Algorithmic rankings a debatable topic

MLB Network’s shortstop rankings achieved their implicit goal of stimulating baseball discourse. Chisholm’s reaction highlighted both team chemistry and the Yankees’ faith in emerging talent. While Volpe’s current exclusion reflects performance metrics, his potential for advancement remains clear.

The 2025 season presents Volpe with opportunities to address skeptics while contributing to team success. Chisholm’s public support exemplifies clubhouse unity, while baseball’s depth at shortstop underscores the sport’s evolutionary direction. Volpe’s future ranking position remains undetermined, but strong organizational and teammate support provides an optimal development environment.
