NEW YORK — A night after their bullpen torched a winnable game, the Yankees leaned on a starter, a rookie and a closer to squeeze past the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.
The Cardinals outhit the Yankees 6-5 and kept putting runners on. They still never scored. St. Louis went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position, and the Yankees turned every threat away.
Ryan Weathers set the tone with six scoreless innings. George Lombard Jr. provided the margin with a home run in his major league debut. David Bednar slammed the door with a four-out save. Three arms, one shutout, and a bounce-back the Yankees badly needed.
The win pulled the Yankees even in the three-game series and quieted, at least for a night, the questions that followed Monday’s 13-7 collapse. This time the Yankees pitching held, and the rookie stole the show.
It was the Yankees’ 12th shutout of the season, a reminder that the pitching staff can carry a lineup still missing Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton. On a night when the offense managed just five hits, that was exactly enough.
Weathers builds the foundation
Ryan Weathers gave the Yankees length and calm. The left-hander needed only 88 pitches to work six scoreless innings, scattering four hits, walking one and striking out six. He did not allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth.
That lone jam tested him. With two outs in the sixth, JJ Wetherholt walked and Iván Herrera singled. Weathers bore down and escaped, then handed the game to the bullpen with the lead intact.
The outing extended his scoreless streak to 18 innings and dropped his ERA to 3.79, its lowest mark since May. It also marked the first time in his career he has strung together consecutive starts of at least five scoreless innings.
Weathers has quietly reshaped his arsenal. He has nearly abandoned his four-seam fastball, throwing it just seven times Tuesday after leaning on it far more earlier in the year. He explained the shift in simple terms.
“The other pitches stay in the ballpark,” Weathers said.
The workload matters, too. Injuries wrecked his 2025 season, and durability questions trailed him to the Bronx after the Yankees acquired him in January. He is now up to 22 starts and 121 innings, both career highs, with two months still to play.
Lombard seals it in a debut to remember
The decisive swing belonged to a 21-year-old playing his first big league game. Lombard, the Yankees’ top prospect and the new answer at shortstop after Anthony Volpe’s demotion, homered in his second career at-bat to double the lead in the fifth.
Facing right-hander Hunter Dobbins, Lombard ambushed an 0-2 sweeper and drove it into the left-center-field seats. It was his first major league hit. The crowd of 41,081 rose as he circled the bases.
The home run put Lombard in rare company. He became the 14th Yankee to homer in his MLB debut, and the first since Jason Domínguez in 2023. At 21 years and 63 days, he is the third-youngest Yankee ever to do it. He was also the youngest player to start at shortstop for the Yankees since Derek Jeter in 1995.
George Lombard tried to keep the moment in perspective, then admitted afterward how much it meant.
“It was a moment, a swing and a day I won’t forget,” Lombard said.
His glove may have been even more impressive than his bat. Lombard handled all five of his chances cleanly and helped turn two double plays. The first came in the second inning, when he backhanded a hard grounder from Blaze Jordan, spun and fired to second to start a 6-4-3 double play.
Manager Aaron Boone has watched Lombard field like this since spring training and reached for an unusual comparison to describe his ease.
“The athleticism, but the physicality that he can play it with, really stands out,” Boone said. “Like a puma.”
Weathers, who watched the rookie clean up behind him, offered a blunter review of the debut.
“He had a great debut,” Weathers said. “He took it by storm.”
Bednar locks down the escape
The lead was only two runs, and the Cardinals kept pushing. A day after the bullpen imploded, the Yankees needed clean relief. They got it from three arms.
Fernando Cruz allowed a hit in two-thirds of an inning. Brent Headrick recorded the final out of the seventh for the Yankees, then ran into trouble in the eighth, allowing a hit and a walk before striking out Herrera for the second out.
That brought in Bednar with the tying run on base. He intentionally walked pinch-hitter Alec Burleson to load the bases, then struck out Nelson Velázquez to end the threat. Bednar returned for a 1-2-3 ninth to finish a four-out save, his 25th of the season.
Bednar has been nearly untouchable for two months. He has not allowed a run in 24 of his past 25 appearances, and Boone made clear how much the closer has steadied the back end.
“He’s been great,” Boone said. “It’s been a couple months now where it’s been really lockdown by him.”
A shutout that steadies the Yankees
The Yankees left chances of their own on the bases. They loaded up first and third with no outs in the fourth and came away empty when Ben Rice was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice. On most nights that stranded rally stings. On this one, the pitching made it moot.
Both runs came on solo homers. Jazz Chisholm Jr. launched a 397-foot shot in the second for the early lead, and Lombard added his blast in the fifth. That was the entire offense, and it proved enough behind a staff that has now blanked opponents a dozen times.
The Yankees remain in the thick of the American League East race, second behind the Tampa Bay Rays, and the win steadied a team that could not afford back-to-back losses to a sub-.500 club. Hunter Dobbins took the loss for St. Louis. Weathers earned the win.
The series finale comes Wednesday night in the Bronx, with right-hander Will Warren set to face Cardinals right-hander Andre Pallante. For one night, though, the story was a starter who steadied the ship, a rookie who lit up the Stadium, and a closer who shut the door.
