Following the Yankees’ 3-2 loss to the Mariners, manager Aaron Boone provided an important update on Juan Soto’s condition after his collision with the outfield wall. Boone was cautiously optimistic, stating that Soto would undergo X-rays to rule out any serious injury, but initial signs suggested he had avoided major damage.
In an interview with Bryan Hoch, Juan Soto revealed he slid directly into concrete and will undergo X-rays. When asked about his chances of playing in Oakland tomorrow, he said it would depend on how his knee feels in the morning.
Coincidentally, Boone emphasized that Juan Soto’s decision to slide just before impact likely mitigated the severity of the incident.
“I think sliding the way he did helped,” Boone said. “My biggest fear was that he might have twisted something, but sliding probably protected him a bit, even though he banged his knee pretty good.”
Despite the visible pain, Boone also reassured reporters that the early assessment appeared positive. “We’ll get X-rays to be sure, but as of now, it looks like he’ll be okay,” Boone added.
What happened to Juan Soto
During Thursday’s game, Yankees star Juan Soto gave fans a scare in the bottom of the seventh inning. With Mariners runners on first and second, Jorge Polanco hit a deep fly ball down the right-field line. Soto, known for his aggressive defense, sprinted toward the ball, fully committed to making the catch. Sliding near the wall, his left knee collided with an unpadded section. Although he secured the ball, it was clear he was in significant discomfort.
After throwing the ball back into play, Juan Soto collapsed on the field, surrounded by concerned teammates and medical staff. However, he insisted on staying in the game and completed it, showing remarkable grit. He finished the day with two at-bats, one walk, and an average around .286.
In addition to Juan Soto’s scare, the Yankees also had to deal with Jake Cousins exiting the game early due to right pectoral tightness. Cousins left after experiencing discomfort, and his status for the upcoming games is uncertain as he undergoes further evaluation.
