Yankees’ treatment of Anthony Volpe feels unfair after sudden position change

NEW YORK — Anthony Volpe‘s Yankees career has taken another abrupt turn.

Less than two years ago, he started at shortstop in the World Series. He had already won a Gold Glove as a rookie. The Yankees installed him as their everyday shortstop in 2023.

That certainty has disappeared during a turbulent 2026 season. Volpe opened the year recovering from left shoulder surgery. He later lost playing time to Jose Caballero. Then his major league role vanished entirely.

The Bombers optioned Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after their Aug. 3 loss. One day later, they promoted top prospect George Lombard Jr. Lombard immediately became the Yankees’ starting shortstop.

Volpe’s demotion followed a difficult offensive stretch. He hit .240/.325/.322 in 56 major league games. He had one home run and 19 RBIs. His defensive inconsistency also remained part of the evaluation.

The move alone carried obvious weight for the Yankees. Volpe had been their primary shortstop since 2023. He also started throughout the Bombers’ 2024 postseason run.

But the demotion was only the first part of the story. The Yankees then gave Volpe a new developmental assignment. That decision changed the debate around his treatment.

The Yankees finally moved Volpe across the infield

Volpe began playing second base after reaching Triple-A. His first game there came Aug. 8. It was his first professional game away from shortstop since 2021.

The timing matters because the idea was not completely new. Aaron Boone had discussed second-base work with Volpe in May. Volpe also took occasional grounders there while with the Yankees.

What changed in August was the setting. The Bronx Bombers finally used him at second base in games. They did so only after removing him from the major league roster.

That sequence has fueled criticism around the Yankees’ development plan. The club spent years committing to Volpe at shortstop. It then changed course during a postseason race.

Volpe handled three chances cleanly in his first Triple-A game at second. He later returned to shortstop before receiving more work on the right side.

The New York team have not announced a permanent position change. They are testing whether Volpe can become more versatile.

The earlier timeline changes the criticism

The Yankees did not suddenly discover second base in August. That distinction matters to the timeline.

Boone said in May that Volpe would begin mixing in work there. The Yankees had Jose Caballero available at shortstop. Jazz Chisholm Jr. remained the regular second baseman.

A July report then claimed Volpe refused a position switch. Volpe publicly denied that account. The report was later retracted.

That episode matters now because it changes the development question. Volpe was not blocking a move to second base. The Yankees had already discussed the possibility with him.

The sharper criticism concerns game experience. New York waited until Triple-A to test Volpe there during games. The Bronx Bombers made that move after his demotion.

That delay created an awkward contrast. Lombard received the major league shortstop job immediately. Volpe received a new position assignment in the minors.

Volpe’s numbers explain why the Yankees changed course

Volpe’s 2026 production made the Yankees’ shortstop decision easier. Before the demotion, he owned a .647 OPS across 56 games.

His lone homer came during a season shortened by shoulder rehabilitation. He also had 19 RBIs before the Yankees optioned him.

Boone had repeatedly identified offensive consistency as Volpe’s next step. Lombard’s arrival gave the New York team another internal option.

Lombard homered in his major league debut on Aug. 4. He also helped turn two double plays that night. His early defense strengthened the Yankees’ willingness to keep him at shortstop.

By Aug. 17, Lombard was hitting .270 through 11 major league games. His OPS stood at .817. His fielding percentage was .984.

Volpe has shown some response at Triple-A. He homered in his first game after the demotion. The 431-foot drive came with a 106.7 mph exit velocity.

Through five games, Volpe was 7-for-23 with a .304 average. He had one homer and two RBIs at that point. He added another home run on Aug. 14.

Those results do not settle his future. They do show that the Yankees still have a usable player to evaluate.

The Yankees now face a development question they created

The Yankees entered Aug. 18 at 69-55. They sat 5 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East. Every roster decision carries added pressure during that chase.

That pressure explains why New York moved quickly with Lombard. It does not erase questions about Volpe’s development path.

The Yankees can argue that Volpe needed Triple-A repetitions before changing positions. That approach protects him from learning on the fly in the Bronx.

Critics can point to the earlier calendar. The Yankees first discussed second base in May. Actual game reps did not arrive until August.

Volpe is now learning a new major league pathway from the minors. Lombard has the shortstop job in New York. Chisholm remains at second for the current Yankees lineup.

No trade has been announced. No return date has been set for Volpe. The Bronx Bombers have not committed to his position beyond this experiment.

That leaves the situation unsettled through Aug. 18. Volpe remains under Yankees control and continues working at second base. The organization must now determine where he fits next.
