Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, died unexpectedly while on vacation in Costa Rica on March 21. According to local authorities, preliminary findings suggest asphyxiation potentially connected to food intoxication, though comprehensive autopsy and toxicology reports remain forthcoming.

The incident occurred at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, an upscale property situated on the Pacific coastline of the tourist destination Manuel Antonio.

What actually happened?

Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency reports that Miller was discovered unresponsive in his hotel room early Friday, following an illness that had affected multiple family members. Agency spokesperson Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia informed NBC News that investigators believe Miller may have ingested contaminated food, triggering a series of reactions that culminated in asphyxia.

Statement from Brett and Jessica Gardner:

With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation. We have so many… pic.twitter.com/lBCBVmKGUe

In their statement, Brett and Jessica Gardner confirmed that their son passed away while sleeping.

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep,” the couple said. “Our hearts are shattered.”

What is asphyxiation induced by food intoxication?

Asphyxiation occurs when oxygen deprivation leads to unconsciousness and potentially death. When related to food intoxication, this condition can stem from choking on vomit, blocked airways, or compromised respiratory function as toxins interfere with the brain’s automatic breathing mechanisms.

Severe food poisoning or allergic responses occasionally produce simultaneous vomiting and consciousness loss. If normal protective reflexes become impaired, individuals might inhale vomit or position themselves in ways that obstruct breathing passages, potentially causing accidental suffocation during sleep.

Healthcare professionals explain that though food poisoning rarely causes direct asphyxiation, its secondary effects—particularly during sleep or weakened states—can become fatal without immediate recognition and intervention.

Days after Miller’s passing, his girlfriend Zoe Williams shared an emotional tribute via TikTok. Accompanied by Phoebe Bridgers’ poignant song “Scott Street,” the video montage showcased their relationship through shared outfits, personal jokes, and carefree moments.

“I just wish I could’ve said goodbye or talked to you or even given you a hug one last time,” Zoe wrote. “I’ll never be able to get over your loss… You made me feel so special and I’ll never forget that.”

The tribute has garnered significant attention across social platforms, reflecting the profound grief experienced by those connected to Miller.

US and Costa Rican authorities investigating

The US State Department has verified its collaboration with Costa Rican officials while monitoring the ongoing investigation. Authorities are also supporting the Gardner family with arrangements to return Miller’s remains to the United States.

Though information remains limited, Costa Rican government representatives have emphasized that circumstances surrounding Miller’s death continue under thorough examination, including food safety measures at the resort and possible environmental or toxic factors.

Upscale resort under scrutiny

The Arenas Del Mar resort, recognized for its premium accommodations and environmental consciousness, now faces investigation as officials determine whether foodborne illness contributed to Miller’s death. Reports indicate multiple family members became sick during their stay, though only Miller’s condition proved fatal.

Regional news sources indicate health officials have begun analyzing food samples and kitchen facilities at the resort as part of their broader inquiry.

Baseball world in mourning

Miller, the only son of Brett and Jessica Gardner, was known among friends and family as intelligent, compassionate, and vibrant. His death has plunged the Gardner family—and the broader Yankees community—into mourning.

Brett Gardner, now 41, dedicated his entire 14-year professional baseball career to the New York Yankees, earning All-Star recognition in 2015 and securing a World Series championship in 2009. Respected for his determination and leadership qualities, Gardner remains a cherished figure in Yankees history.

Miller Gardner’s tragic passing serves as a stark reminder of life’s fragility. What should have been a peaceful family retreat instead ended in devastating loss. As the Gardners process their grief, the sports world has united behind them, with fans, colleagues, and loved ones offering tributes.

While the definitive cause of death awaits confirmation through toxicology and autopsy results, the initial findings—asphyxiation potentially resulting from food-related intoxication—highlight the critical importance of food safety standards, even at premier travel destinations.
