In the Yankees’ 6-3 win over the Guardians in Game 2 of the ALCS, the bullpen once again played a pivotal role, with Tim Hill emerging as an unexpected standout. The left-hander joined Clay Holmes, Luke Weaver, and Tommy Kahnle in delivering crucial performances, helping secure the victory.
Gerrit Cole‘s early departure put immediate pressure on the relievers, and the Yankees first turned to Holmes, who expertly worked out of a jam in the fifth inning by getting two critical outs. Manager Aaron Boone then handed the ball to Tim Hill, who impressed by retiring all five batters he faced, allowing Kahnle to finish the job.
Tim Hill’d performance marked a sharp contrast to his earlier struggles this postseason. In his previous three appearances for the Yankees, he had allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) over just 1 ⅓ innings. This time, however, Tim Hill was dominant, facing the heart of Cleveland’s lineup with poise. He got leadoff hitter Steven Kwan to line out softly to third and induced a groundout from Kyle Manzardo to end the sixth. Tim Hill kept his momentum in the seventh, getting both Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor to ground out to third base.

As Tim Hill exited the mound, the Yankees reliever received a well-deserved ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd. After the game, he expressed his gratitude for the fans’ support, noting how much their recognition meant to him.
“I just trusted my stuff,’’ he remarked. “It’s playoff baseball. You go out there and get as many outs as you can.”

Tim Hill’s resurgence not only bolstered the Yankees’ bullpen depth but also added another reliable arm to their postseason mix, strengthening their chances as they took a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.
His path to becoming a key piece of the Yankees bullpen is a story of resilience, especially after being released by the White Sox earlier this year. Now, Tim Hill stands on the verge of a potential World Series appearance.

Tim Hill credits his recent success to regained confidence, saying he’s been focusing on locking in and getting as many outs as possible in high-stakes playoff games. His contributions have added depth to a Yankees bullpen that has been pivotal throughout their postseason run.
Yankees’ bullpen saves the day
Clay Holmes continued his dominant postseason form, extending his scoreless streak to 14 ⅔ innings across three playoff appearances. His latest effort built on an already stellar October, where he’s now thrown 6 ⅔ scoreless innings. Meanwhile, Tommy Kahnle has also been a rock for the Yankees, delivering 5 ⅔ shutout innings, including four crucial outs in Tuesday’s win.
Luke Weaver, who has taken over as the team’s closer, was brought in to finish the game, despite it not being a save situation. While he surrendered a solo home run to Jose Ramirez with one out in the ninth, Weaver settled down and closed out the inning to secure the win.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone underscored the importance of the bullpen to the team’s success, emphasizing that the Yankees’ postseason fate rests largely on their relievers’ ability to shut down opponents in crucial moments.
“They were great. Obviously Clay coming in in a huge spot there to get us out of the fifth and keep the lead for us. Then Tim Hill was huge, going from the bottom — I think I started him with Rocchio there, had the 1, 2, 3 inning, was considering going right to Tommy there in the seventh for Ramírez, but once we extended the lead by two, I really wanted him to go back out and go through Naylor,” the Yankees manager said. “He got both of them out, which was huge, and I was able to shorten it a little bit there for Tommy. Tommy gets four big outs for us obviously, and Weaver finishes it off. Great job out there by those guys. They did their job really well tonight.”
This collective effort from the Yankees’ bullpen, blending veterans like Holmes and Kahnle with surprising standouts like Hill, has become a cornerstone of their playoff campaign, offering the team consistency and clutch innings when they need it most.
