New York Yankees 6-3 Cleveland Guardians
Aaron Judge’s towering home run in the seventh inning lifted the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, extending their lead in the AL Championship Series to 2-0. This marked Judge’s first homer of the postseason, a signature blast that highlighted his ability to deliver in key moments.
The Yankees struck early, grabbing the lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Judge. While Cleveland’s offense briefly rallied, New York’s pitching staff held firm, stifling any momentum. Judge’s late-game home run gave the Yankees a decisive edge, strengthening their control of the series.
Yankees’ Bullpen Shines in Victory
The Yankees’ bullpen was the key to their victory over the Guardians, stepping up after tough outings from both Gerrit Cole and Tanner Bibee. Clay Holmes, Tim Hill, and Tommy Kahnle combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, silencing Cleveland’s offense and preserving the Yankees’ lead.
While José Ramírez’s ninth-inning homer offered a flicker of hope for the Guardians, the Yankees’ relievers held their ground. The bullpen has been dominant throughout the postseason, allowing just one earned run over 23 1/3 innings.
Now up 2-0 in the AL Championship Series, the Yankees are in a strong position heading into Game 3 in Cleveland on Thursday. This marks the first time since 2009 that the Yankees have held a 2-0 ALCS lead when they were up on the Angels.
Torres Leads the Charge
Gleyber Torres continued his hot streak at the plate, playing a pivotal role in the Yankees’ victory. With three hits, including a crucial leadoff single in the fifth inning, Torres was a key contributor to New York’s offensive output. The return of Anthony Rizzo to the lineup also added much-needed firepower, as he chipped in with two hits of his own.
Kansas City’s defensive struggles were costly, starting with Brayan Rocchio’s error, which allowed Torres to score in the first inning. Later, Will Brennan’s misplay on Rizzo’s grounder gifted the Yankees another run, further swinging the momentum in their favor.
Despite Steven Kwan extending his impressive hitting streak to 12 games for the Guardians, the combination of the Royals’ defensive mistakes and the Yankees’ offensive efficiency proved too much, sealing another victory for New York.
Verdugo and Cole show potential
Alex Verdugo‘s clutch double in the second inning, aided by a fortunate deflection off the umpire’s shoulder, gave the Yankees an early lead. The Royals’ offensive efforts were limited, as they went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners stranded.
Gerrit Cole‘s solid performance on the mound was crucial in securing the Yankees’ victory. He successfully navigated through bases-loaded situations in both the third and fourth innings, relying on his pitching repertoire to retire key batters. Clay Holmes’ relief efforts further solidified the Yankees’ lead, as he struck out Austin Hedges to end a potential threat.
The Yankees’ combination of strong pitching and timely defensive plays allowed them to hold on for the win, extending their lead in the AL Championship Series.

Right-hander Clarke Schmidt is set to take the mound for the Yankees in Thursday’s series finale against the Cleveland Guardians. Schmidt showed promise in his Game 3 start of the Division Series, allowing just two runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings, though the Guardians were able to chip away at an early Yankees lead.
With the chance to sweep the Guardians and advance, the Yankees are riding a wave of momentum from previous victories. Schmidt’s prior experience against Cleveland this season could give him an edge as he looks to guide New York to a series-clinching win.
