As the holiday season draws to a close, several former New York Yankees are making headlines for their heartwarming efforts to give back to their communities. From hosting festive events for children to organizing food drives, these acts of generosity highlight the spirit of giving that defines the season. Leading the charge is former Yankees pitcher and Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia, whose foundation brought joy to underprivileged kids in the New York area.

CC Sabathia’s holiday caravan: A dream come true

CC and Amber Sabathia’s PitCCh In Foundation recently held its annual Holiday Caravan, creating a memorable experience for about 110 children from the John Grimm Madison Boys and Girls Club and the Bronx Arts Charter School. The event, held on December 6 at American Dream’s Nickelodeon Universe in East Rutherford, New Jersey, featured a pop-up store where kids could “shop” for items at no cost, thanks to the foundation and generous sponsors.

Sabathia, reflecting on the importance of the event, said, “This is our biggest event. This is something that I kind of dreamt up in my head, me and Amber. Just wanted to do something good for kids during this time. I know it’s tough for some of these families, so if we can pick up the slack in some of these areas, I think we can help out.”

The pop-up store offered a variety of items, including Nike shoes, Jordan Brand drawstring bags, winter coats, and apparel representing local sports teams—even the Mets. In addition to stylish clothing, children could take home toys, candy, and other essentials. After their shopping spree, the kids enjoyed food and tickets to Nickelodeon Universe, making the day a festive celebration.

Sabathia’s dedication to community service extends beyond the holiday season, as he continues to make an impact through his foundation. His efforts this year reaffirm his commitment to helping families in need, a cause he and his wife hold close to their hearts. With Sabathia eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2025, his legacy on and off the field continues to shine brightly.

Nick Swisher’s storytime tradition

CC Sabathia wasn’t the only former Yankee spreading holiday cheer. Nick Swisher, a key member of the Yankees’ 2009 championship team, joined his wife, actress JoAnna Garcia Swisher, for a holiday event in Tampa. On December 4, the Swishers participated in the Yankees and Steinbrenner family’s 34th Annual Children’s Holiday Concert Series. Held at the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts, the event was originally established by the late George M. Steinbrenner to support at-risk and underprivileged children in the Tampa community.

The Swishers greeted children with warmth and enthusiasm, reading the classic holiday story ‘‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’’ and spreading festive cheer. Their involvement in the concert series underscores the enduring commitment of the Yankees organization and its alumni to uplifting local communities during the holiday season.

Dellin Betances gives back to Brooklyn

Back in New York City, former Yankees reliever Dellin Betances brought his own brand of holiday spirit to the borough where he grew up. Ahead of Thanksgiving, Betances led a food drive at P.S. 257 John F. Hylan Elementary School in Brooklyn. The event saw over 300 turkeys, canned goods, and other essential items distributed to local families, ensuring they could enjoy a hearty holiday meal.

“A lot of families were happy with the event,” Betances shared with the YES Network. “It was a great event.”

Betances, who attended Grand Street Campus High School in Brooklyn, has consistently given back to his community. His food drive is just one example of his dedication to supporting families in need and staying connected to his roots.

A legacy of giving back

These acts of kindness from Sabathia, Swisher, and Betances highlight the impact former Yankees continue to have long after their playing days. Their involvement in community initiatives not only spreads holiday cheer but also serves as an inspiration for others to give back. For the Yankees organization, fostering a culture of philanthropy remains a cornerstone of their identity, exemplified by the annual traditions and individual efforts of their alumni.

As the holiday season concludes, the generosity of these former Yankees reminds us all of the power of giving and the importance of uplifting those in need. Whether through shopping sprees, storytime, or food drives, their contributions have made a lasting impact on countless families, ensuring the true spirit of the season lives on.
