Following a split doubleheader against the Texas Rangers, where the Yankees secured an 8-0 victory in the first game but fell 4-9 in the second, the team made a significant roster move involving Ron Marinaccio.
The Yankees optioned reliever Ron Marinaccio back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre once the doubleheader concluded. With a few extra days off in the schedule, the bullpen received some much-needed rest ahead of an important upcoming series.
Ron Marinaccio’s brief return as the “27th” man
On Saturday morning, the Yankees announced Ron Marinaccio as the “27th” man for the doubleheader. The 29-year-old right-hander, who has posted a 2.53 ERA over 21.1 innings this season, was called up to provide additional support. However, his underlying numbers tell a different story, with a 4.12 expected ERA (xERA) and noticeable struggles with strikeouts, walks, and home runs.
Marinaccio’s current performance is a far cry from his impressive 2022 campaign, where he recorded a 2.05 ERA, 11.45 strikeouts per nine innings, and an 81.3% left-on-base rate. Once considered to have the best changeup on the roster, Marinaccio has seen that pitch lose its effectiveness, with opposing hitters posting a .348 batting average against it this year—the highest among his three pitches.

There are certain prospects that due to having to play them, is the only way for them to get supposedly a chance. Ron Marianaccio guys that description. No matter how he was out hung, he was immediately sent down when they acquired another ‘kid’ in Scott Effross, and reclamation project Lou Trivino. He’s better off going elsewhere.
