The New York Yankees are feeling the heat from their fans as a season filled with ups and downs leaves many pointing fingers at two key figures: General Manager Brian Cashman and Manager Aaron Boone.
Cashman addresses Yankees’ struggles amidst tough season
In an interview this Tuesday evening, Cashman addressed the Yankees‘ ongoing struggles.
“It’s been a tough stretch for the Yankees this season. Thankfully, we got out of the gates really strong. Hopefully, that cushion will allow us to work through this — hopefully sooner rather than later, because it’s gone on long enough. But it’s been a tough stretch for us,” said Cashman.
Currently, the Yankees hold a record of 55-37, trailing the first-place Baltimore Orioles by four games. This gap has been exacerbated by a losing streak at the end of June, casting doubt on the team’s early season success.
Yankees under Boone’s management: Stats and fans’ pressure
According to the account @YankeesNerds on X.com, Aaron Boone’s tenure has been marked by extreme highs followed by prolonged lows. Notably, in 2018, the Yankees started 50-22, then slumped to 18-19. In 2020, they began 16-6, then went 5-15. In 2021, they kicked off 28-19, then slipped to 23-28. In 2022, they roared out to 61-23, then fell to 18-31. In 2023, they started 36-25, then declined to 26-43. This season, they began 49-21 and are now 6-16.
Many fans are calling for Boone’s dismissal, questioning his ability to lead the Yankees into a successful future.
Despite the mounting pressure, Boone has the support of major Yankees figures. Aaron Judge, in a recent interview on Casa De Klubs’ podcast, defended Boone, stating he is the perfect guy to bridge old-school and modern baseball approaches.
Chris Kirschner of The Athletic highlighted a significant issue during the Yankees’ 6-16 stretch: the lineup’s struggles. Heading into today’s game, the team had four of the 25 worst hitters by wRC+ since June 13, the most by any team: Anthony Volpe with 32 wRC+, DJ LeMahieu with 42 wRC+, Gleyber Torres with 65 wRC+, and Alex Verdugo with 65 wRC+.

Until the roster is significantly changed, or the reliance on analytics, in both game plan and coaching is severely curtailed, what can Boone, or anyone else really do? The pitching has been downright awful for the last month, why has no heat gone to Cashman’s hand picked pitching coach, that Boone had no real way in hiring.
