The baseball world finds itself embroiled in a spirited discussion following the release of MLB’s Top 100 rankings, where Los Angeles Dodgers phenomenon Shohei Ohtani claimed the premier position ahead of New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge. The placement has sparked considerable controversy, with Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay leading the charge in questioning the methodology behind this hierarchical arrangement, pointing to Judge’s superior statistical performance in the previous season.

Michael Kay takes aim at rankings

Kay, a respected voice in baseball broadcasting, delivered an impassioned critique of the rankings during his eponymous program, The Michael Kay Show.

“On what planet can you say that Ohtani is better than Judge? I don’t understand it,” Kay exclaimed. “Are you projecting in 2025 that you think Ohtani is going to go back to being a dominant pitcher?”

The veteran broadcaster meticulously detailed his position, emphasizing Judge’s statistical dominance across multiple offensive categories. His analysis highlighted the Yankees star’s superiority in crucial metrics, including batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, home runs, and RBIs.

“The one thing that he leads in of any substance to me, is stolen bases. But the other substantial analytic numbers, Judge leads in all of them,” Kay argued. “Again, WAR is the most important thing. They make decisions, they go to arbitration cases with WAR and Judge beats him. So how is Ohtani better? The only way he’s better is if he in fact pitches.”

Kay acknowledged the historical nature of both players’ abilities while advocating for a data-driven approach to player evaluation.

“I think that everybody involved in MLB is absolutely in awe of the skill sets exhibited by Ohtani, and they should be. He’s one of the best baseball players ever and so is Judge,” Kay added. “So when they’re that close, you’ve got to look at the statistics, that’s the only thing that you have that can actually break a tie. Judge’s statistics are far superior than Ohtani’s.”

A comparative look at 2024 numbers

Yankees star Aaron Judge and Dodgers phenomenon Shohei Ohtani. Both have delivered extraordinary seasons

The 2024 season showcased exceptional performances from both superstars, each playing pivotal roles in their teams’ World Series appearances. While the Dodgers emerged victorious in the Fall Classic, the individual comparison between these elite performers remains a subject of intense analysis.

An examination of the statistical landscape reveals a complex picture of excellence. Ohtani demonstrated superiority in several categories, including plate appearances, runs scored, strikeout percentage, and stolen bases. However, Judge’s offensive prowess manifested in superior numbers across batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, home runs, and RBIs.

The evaluation becomes more nuanced when considering Ohtani’s unique dual-threat potential, though this aspect remained dormant throughout 2024 due to injury rehabilitation. This circumstance has added another layer of complexity to the ranking debate.

Aaron Judge vs. Ohtani 2025 projections

Following a stellar 2024 campaign where he led Major League Baseball with 58 home runs and 144 RBIs, while achieving a .322 batting average, Judge remains a cornerstone of the Yankees’ lineup. Various reputable sources have projected Judge’s performance for the upcoming season:

  • RotoChamp: Anticipates Judge will play 158 games, amass 686 plate appearances, and hit 49 home runs with 126 RBIs.
  • FanGraphs’ Depth Charts: Projects Judge to participate in 159 games, with 686 plate appearances, 49 home runs, and 126 RBIs.
  • Razzball: Foresees Judge playing 145 games, accumulating 615 plate appearances, and delivering 41 home runs with 101 RBIs.
  • Total Apex Fantasy Sports: Projects a .284 batting average with 48 home runs and 114 RBIs, solidifying his status as a top-three pick in fantasy drafts.

According to FanGraphs’ Steamer projections, Ohtani is projected to record 43 home runs, 123 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases, with a batting average of .280 in 152 games. His pitching return is tentatively slated for mid-2025. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that while Ohtani’s shoulder recovery is on schedule, his exact return to the mound will depend on his progress during bullpen sessions. A potential return in May has been suggested, but no definitive timeline has been established.

In fantasy baseball circles, Ohtani remains a highly coveted asset. The Steamer model projects Ohtani to finish 2025 with an 8.1 fWAR, reflecting his substantial contributions both offensively and, upon his return, on the mound.

The debate continues

As baseball moves toward the 2025 campaign, the conversation surrounding MLB’s premier player designation shows no signs of resolution. The dynamic nature of Ohtani’s situation, particularly regarding his potential return to pitching excellence, adds an intriguing dimension to the discussion. Should he successfully resume his two-way role with his characteristic dominance, the conversation about player value may require significant recalibration.

However, Judge’s consistent offensive brilliance presents a compelling counterargument, especially if Ohtani’s pitching contributions remain limited or fail to meet previous standards. The Yankees‘ broadcast team, alongside a substantial portion of the baseball community, maintains that the current rankings may have undervalued Judge’s extraordinary contributions to the game.

The ongoing discourse reflects broader questions about how to evaluate and compare players with drastically different skill sets and roles. As baseball continues to evolve, the criteria for determining the game’s premier talent may require further refinement to adequately capture the unique contributions of players like Ohtani and Judge.

This debate invites readers to consider their own perspectives on this compelling question: Does Ohtani’s potential for two-way excellence justify his top ranking, or should Judge’s proven offensive dominance take precedence? The baseball community eagerly awaits your insights on this fascinating discussion.
