Yankees right-hander Luis Gil has earned the prestigious title of Baseball Digest’s 2024 American League Rookie of the Year, marking a significant milestone in his early MLB career.
The announcement, made Thursday, positioned Luis Gil ahead of Baltimore’s Colton Cowser and Oakland’s Mason Miller. His impressive debut season has not only elevated his reputation but also bolstered the Yankees’ starting rotation, showcasing Gil as a key asset for the organization’s future.
Gil’s Impactful Rookie Season
Gil’s 2024 season statistics demonstrate why he earned this honor. The 26-year-old pitcher concluded the season with a 15-7 record, a 3.50 ERA, and 171 strikeouts across 29 starts. He made his first career Opening Day roster this year, establishing himself as a reliable starter for the Yankees. Gil allowed three or fewer runs in 22 of his 29 outings, with 18 starts holding opponents to two or fewer runs. His most notable statistic: Gil delivered 17 games with one or no runs allowed, tying Tarik Skubal of the Tigers and Garrett Crochet of the White Sox for the most in the majors this season.
The Elias Sports Bureau noted that Gil’s achievement ranks him second in MLB history for one-run or fewer starts by a rookie in a single season. He is outpaced only by George McQuillan’s 21 such starts for the 1908 Philadelphia Phillies, underscoring the historical significance of Gil’s performance.
Historical comparisons and milestones
Luis Gil’s 171 strikeouts set a high standard for Yankees rookies, marking the second-highest single-season total in franchise history, just behind Russ Ford’s 209 in 1910. With this achievement, Gil joins a prestigious list of Yankees players recognized by Baseball Digest as AL Rookie of the Year, including Derek Jeter (1996) and Aaron Judge (2017).
When asked in late September about the possibility of receiving this award, Luis Gil expressed his pride and gratitude. “It would be a blessing, just understanding where I come from. I come from a small town [Azua, Dominican Republic]. It would mean a lot to me, mean a lot for my people back home and for us as an organization,” he said through an interpreter. This honor not only signifies Gil’s personal achievement but also reflects his dedication and growth as a player.
The Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) Rookie of the Year Awards will be announced on November 18, where Gil remains a top contender. His season with the Yankees has set a high bar for future rookies and emphasized his potential to contribute significantly to the team’s pitching staff in the coming years.
