Fans expect Jasson Dominguez to be on the Yankees roster after a strong performance this spring. However, the team sent him to the minor league camp on Thursday. However, his spring performance showed a lot of promise for the switch-hitter fondly called “The Martian.”
MLB Pipeline ranks Jasson Dominguez as the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect. He was one of the team’s best hitters this spring, hitting .455 (10-for-22) with a double, four home runs, and nine RBIs in 11 Grapefruit League games.
“He’s a promising-looking player,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said earlier this week. “I’ve been impressed with how at ease he is, how much he seems to enjoy the game and enjoy his teammates. It looks to me like in the batter’s box, the game is moving slow for him.
“He’s got that in his DNA, that knowledge of the strike zone. He lays off pitches easy and has really good thump from both sides.”
Jasson Dominguez rubbed shoulders with veterans despite being the youngest among the invited players at the Yankees spring outing. The 20-year-old is now to play for the Double-A Somerset. He took to the field for them in five games last year. Boone has said that he could see Dominguez helping at the big-league level this season.
Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner also took notice of the young star. He was there when Jasson Dominguez smashed a two-run homer against Philadelphia on March 11. Steinbrenner called the hit an “impressive” home run.
“We put a lot of money into him, right?” Steinbrenner said while reminding $5.1 million paid to the Dominican when he joined the Yankees in 2019. “That was my entire [international] budget, pretty much, a few years ago. That’s how much we believed in him, even then. He’s another one that came on really strong last year. It’s exciting.”
For now, Jasson Dominguez will leave. He had shown his talent this spring playing with the Yankees’ veterans. Dominguez recently said that he was happy to interact with Aaron Judge, Jose Trevino, Luis Severino, and Domingo German at the spring training.
“It was hard to have an expectation because I had no idea how it was going to be or what to expect from it,” Jasson Dominguez said through an interpreter. “But now being here, man, it’s been great. A great experience.”
