Saying goodbye to the Yankees, welcoming the Mets: Luke Voit returns to New York
Luke Voit’s return to New York might present a significant challenge for him. He may have to face the fact that he has a history with the New York Mets’ biggest rival. It could prove quite tough for him if things don’t go as expected.
Voit’s time with the Yankees was undoubtedly the most successful period of his career. He joined the team in 2018 when the St. Louis Cardinals traded him to the Yankees midway through the season. In just 39 games that year, Voit showed off his power, hitting 14 home runs, driving in 33 RBIs, and posting an impressive slash line of .333/.405/.689 with an outstanding 1.094 OPS.
The following season, Voit continued to make an impact, recording a .263 batting average, along with 21 home runs and 62 RBIs. Unfortunately, he faced an abdominal injury that kept him out for two months and required surgery after the season.
However, Voit’s most remarkable season came during the shortened 2020 campaign due to COVID-19, where he led the entire Major League with 22 home runs in just 56 games. His impressive power numbers solidified his reputation as a formidable slugger.
In his final season with the Yankees, Voit struggled with injuries, leading the team to acquire Anthony Rizzo. As Rizzo settled in as the starting first baseman, Voit’s role became uncertain. Consequently, during the offseason, the Yankees traded him to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Justin Lange.
During last season’s trade deadline, Voit was once again involved in a significant trade, this time between the Washington Nationals and the Padres. The trade saw star players Juan Soto and Josh Bell move from the Nationals to the Padres, with Voit included in the package.
Now, Voit finds himself in a new chapter of his career with the New York Mets organization. As he joins the city’s cross-town rivals, he will have the opportunity to showcase his skills and contribute to the Mets’ success. Fans will be closely watching to see how Voit performs and whether he can bring his power-hitting abilities to the team.
