The New York Yankees, a powerhouse in the American League East, are grappling with a significant challenge as the 2025 MLB season approaches. Injuries to key rotation members Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil have left the team scrambling for solutions, with the front office under pressure to maintain competitiveness. While the Yankees have limited rotation depth options to replace the duo, the likelihood of the team settling for trade moves can’t be ruled out.
Double blow to Yankees rotation
The Yankees’ pitching staff, once a cornerstone of their strength, has been hit hard. Gerrit Cole, the team’s ace, is facing another elbow issue, which had forced him to undergo diagnostic tests. Reports indicate he might miss the entire season, echoing concerns from last year when he was sidelined until June. Clarke Schmidt, a teammate, remarked, “There’s no way to sugarcoat it – he’s a top of the league guy and has been an ace in this league for a long, long time. He’ll be missed if it’s something longer-term.” This underscores the gravity of the situation.
Luis Gil, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, is also out with a high-grade lat strain, diagnosed in early March 2025. Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed on March 3, 2025, that Gil won’t throw for at least six weeks, likely missing the season’s start. This injury, following his breakout 2024 season (15-7, 3.50 ERA), is a significant blow, leaving the rotation thin.
Trade targets: A mix of ex-Yankees and new stars
With internal options like Clarke Schmidt and Will Warren potentially stepping up, the Yankees are also eyeing external reinforcements. Here are the top five such players they may consider.
#1. Michael King: The new star in the market
Michael King could be on the top of the Yankees’ wishlist after his transformed identity makes him a top-tier target in MLB. The pitcher was once seen as a rebuilt Yankees asset, transitioning from reliever to starter. However, he was traded to the San Diego Padres before the 2024 season, making him an external target now. In 2024, King posted a 2.95 ERA in 104.2 innings, a 13-9 record, and 201 strikeouts, showcasing his potential. Trading for him back from the Padres seems unlikely given his value and recent trade history, but his performance makes him a notable mention.

#2. Dylan Cease: The high-ceiling pitching arm
Dylan Cease, once with the Chicago White Sox, is now a key part of the San Diego Padres’ rotation. His 2024 stats (14-11, 3.47 ERA, 224 strikeouts in 189.1 innings) highlight his dominance, making him a high-ceiling target. However, with the Padres likely to keep him as their ace, a trade to the Yankees seems improbable, especially given his $13.75 million contract for 2025. But a lucrative offer can reverse it.
#3. Eric Fedde: A reliable arm on the market
Eric Fedde, currently with the St. Louis Cardinals, has emerged as a reliable starter after a successful 2024 with the White Sox (9-9, 3.11 ERA, 154 strikeouts in 177.1 innings). His contract, at $7.5 million for 2025, makes him an attractive option, and trade rumors suggest the Cardinals might be open to deals. The Yankees could see him as a steady presence, taking the mound every five days and delivering quality performances.
#4. Luis Castillo: Ace with trade potential
Luis Castillo, the Seattle Mariners’ ace, has been in trade discussions, with the Mariners willing to listen to offers. His contract, running through 2027 at $24.15 million per year, and a full no-trade clause through 2025, add complexity. However, recent reports from December 2024 indicate exploratory talks, making the 32-year-old a viable target for the Yankees seeking a long-term solution. His latest record stood 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA, 175 strikeouts in 175.1 innings.
#5. Jordan Montgomery: Prodigal son seeking redemption
Jordan Montgomery, now with the Arizona Diamondbacks, exercised his $22.5 million player option for 2025 after a disappointing 2024 (8-7, 6.23 ERA, 83 strikeouts in 117 innings). His past with the Yankees and potential for bounce-back make him an intriguing option, especially if the Diamondbacks are willing to eat part of his salary. A return to the Bronx could rejuvenate his career. However, his snubbing of the Yankees last year may not go down well with the Yankees.

Comparative analysis of trade targets
To better understand the feasibility of the above five pitchers for the Yankees, here’s a table comparing them.
Player | Current Team | 2024 Performance | Contract Status | Trade Likelihood |
---|---|---|---|---|
Michael King | San Diego Padres | 2.75 ERA, 127 K (2023) | Controlled through 2026 | Low |
Dylan Cease | San Diego Padres | 3.47 ERA, 224 K | $13.75M in 2025, FA 2026 | Low |
Eric Fedde | St. Louis Cardinals | 3.11 ERA, 21 starts | $7.5M in 2025, FA 2026 | Medium |
Luis Castillo | Seattle Mariners | 3.64 ERA, 394 K (2 yrs) | $24.15M/yr through 2027 | Medium |
Jordan Montgomery | Arizona Diamondbacks | 6.23 ERA, 117 IP | $22.5M in 2025, FA 2026 | Medium-high |
Yankees’ next steps: A crucial period ahead
With the season looming, the Yankees must act swiftly. Internal options like Clarke Schmidt and Will Warren can fill gaps, but the loss of Cole and Gil necessitates external moves. The front office, led by Brian Cashman, will likely weigh high-risk, high-reward trades like Castillo against cost-effective options like Fedde. The next few weeks will be pivotal, determining whether the Yankees can recover from this setback and remain World Series contenders.
The Yankees’ rotation crisis is a test of their strategic depth, with trade targets like Fedde, Castillo, and Montgomery offering paths forward. As the baseball world watches, the Bronx Bombers’ ability to adapt will define their 2025 campaign.

While I’d love to see a return of King, I’ll assume the Padres wants a kings ransom for him in which we don’t have. The ONLY trade that makes sense is with Cards for Fedde & possibly Arenedo as well. Possibly sending Stroman and Cabrera among others, but we will see. Interesting part is Ca$h and Hal could swing a trade for King or Cease and sign either longterm 4/5 yr 150 Mill and back load the 💰 in order to stay below threshold this yr is possible or at least till trade deadline. 2026 rotation would kick A$$! Cole/Fried/Cease/King/Rodon/Gil/Warren
That would be a kick A$$ Rotation!!! Trading out Schmidt & Stroman in the meantime
