David Wells revisits another spat with Derek Jeter, puts his side

Outspoken Yankees pitching legend David Wells had a highly publicized spat with captain Derek Jeter back in 1998. However, the ex-starting pitcher has now revealed about another confrontation with the Hall of Fame shortstop just 17 days before that.

According to David Wells, as said in a recent episode of the Foul Territory podcast, he and Derek Jeter clashed again on September 1, 1998. He was in the middle of another outstanding game against the Oakland Athletics when the incident occurred. It was the seventh inning, with two outs when Jason Giambi came up to bat and managed to make contact with an 0-2 pitch.

David Wells explained that Derek Jeter had trouble with the sun or the lights during that play, which he considered a routine fly ball. He then described how he reacted by placing his hands on his head, mimicking his response.

This led Derek Jeter to approach him on the mound and tell him that such behavior was not acceptable on their team. In response, David Wells pointed the shortstop to return to his shortstop position, where he would explain the situation.

Giambi’s hit resulted in a single, ending the perfect game with only seven outs remaining. If David Wells had managed to retire all 27 batters without giving up a hit, a walk, or an error, he would have become the only pitcher in history to achieve two perfect games in a single season.

Everything seems to be on good terms between the two now. David Wells admits that he gets along very well with Derek Jeter. They have a good relationship, to the point where Wells even makes a lighthearted comment about Jeter’s singing abilities.

The ex-starter shared how Derek Jeter’s relationship with Mariah Carey led the shortstop to become a bad singer.

“When he was dating Mariah Carey, It was great,” he said about Derek Jeter. “He’d come into the clubhouse singing, and he couldn’t sing for crap.”

Yankees fans came to know about the 1998 spat after Derek Jeter told during the ESPN docuseries “The Captain,” how David Wells expressed frustration by raising his arms in disbelief after a pop fly landed for a single between Jeter and outfielders Ricky Ledee and Chad Curtis. At that time, the shortstop had only been in the big leagues for two years, but he approached Wells to admonish the experienced left-handed pitcher.

The particular incident occurred on September 18, 1998, during a match between the Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles. During this period, manager Joe Torre started to give rest to many of the regular Yankees players. The team had already secured a playoff spot and was close to breaking the American League record for most victories in a single season. Consequently, the manager decided to place inexperienced rookie Ricky Ledee in left field and move Chad Curtis to center field later in the game.

The decision didn’t work out as planned. There was a high pop fly that went over Derek Jeter’s head at shortstop. As Jeter, Ricky Ledee, and Chad Curtis made a somewhat lackluster effort to locate and catch the ball, it ended up dropping between them, resulting in a single for the opposing team. David Wells, who was the pitcher on the mound during this play, didn’t conceal his frustration well. He showed his displeasure by raising his arms in the air to express his disappointment.

The shortstop mentioned that he understood David Wells’ character and clarified that the starter’s actions were not meant to cause harm; it was just his animated nature. Derek Jeter then conveyed to Wells that such behavior was not in line with the team’s standards, and that concluded the matter.

After receiving reports from multiple umpires about a potential altercation between Derek Jeter and David Wells the previous night, columnist Buster Olney approached the shortstop to clarify the situation. However, those rumors were quickly debunked as soon as they were mentioned.

According to Buster Olney, he found it amazing that a figurative barrier appeared during that moment. He explained that Derek Jeter promptly denied the incident, emphasizing his determination to prevent the story from interfering with the Yankees’ outstanding performance at the time, which he described as greatness.

Assisted by his teammates, the former Yankees captain promptly refuted the allegations by questioning several players right then and there if they had seen him confront Wells for a fight. As all the players responded in the negative, Olney realized he needed to search for a different story.

Derek Jeter explained that the media’s goal was to secure a headline, but he was determined not to provide them with one. He emphasized that his primary responsibility was to ensure the team’s readiness and preparation, with the sole focus on winning.

Olney said he thought it was remarkable that, at the age of 24, Derek Jeter displayed leadership qualities on the team. He observed that the young shortstop could approach a veteran pitcher like David Wells on the field and effectively instruct him to cease his behavior. Olney noted that during the 1998 season, Derek was emerging as a leader for the team.
