According to two MLB insiders, the New York Yankees have committed to Aaron Boone for the 2024 season. However, the team’s top brass have determined not to extend his tenure beyond the upcoming season.

According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees don’t appear to be considering firing Aaron Boone. Rosenthal explained that it would be seen as pure scapegoating. He noted that the front office permitted Aaron Boone to bring in Sean Casey as the hitting coach during the All-Star break. Aaron Judge and other players have consistently expressed their support for the manager. Additionally, general manager Brian Cashman and owner Hal Steinbrenner appear to be firmly supporting their manager.

Bob Klapisch of NJ Advance Media also reported the same. He cited a source familiar with Hal Steinbrenner to claim there would be significant changes in how the Yankees operate in 2024. Klapisch mentioned that it’s unclear whether these changes would lead to Aaron Boone’s departure, partly because Steinbrenner would rather not let go of the manager who led the Yankees to the playoffs every year from 2018 to 2022.

Aaron Boone’s contract runs until 2024 off-season

The Yankees manager still has one more year on his contract, and there’s an option for the club to extend Aaron Boone’s term to 2025. On the other hand, Cashman, the general manager, signed a four-year contract extension in December, which means he is under contract until the 2026 season. Despite the Yankees not making the playoffs this year for the first time since 2016, Cashman’s job is considered safe.

According to Rosenthal, both of Aaron Boone’s predecessors, Joe Torre and Joe Girardi, were given the opportunity to complete their contracts. It seems that Boone, who is 50 years old, is expected to receive a similar opportunity.

In late 2022, Aaron Judge became the 16th captain in Yankees history. It was reported in March that Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner had discussions with Judge about various team-related matters. According to Klapisch, Judge is expected to have the owner’s attention during the offseason and could potentially influence the decision regarding Aaron Boone’s future. However, Rosenthal suggested that the current may not require special intervention from Judge to continue with the team beyond the regular-season finale on Sunday.
