The New York Yankees have roared out of the gate with one of baseball’s most potent offenses to begin the 2025 campaign. They’ve managed this impressive feat despite a somewhat muted contribution from offseason acquisition Cody Bellinger. However, beneath the surface of his statistics, promising developments suggest the former MVP may be on the cusp of finding his stride in pinstripes with a leap in swing speed.

Bellinger, who captured National League MVP honors in 2019 before joining the Yankees this winter, hasn’t exactly set the Bronx ablaze with his initial production. Through his first eight contests and 32 trips to the plate, he’s managed a modest .233/.281/.344 batting line accompanied by just a single home run and six RBIs. Though these figures fall considerably short of the standard he established during his Silver Slugger campaign in 2023, deeper performance indicators and a key technical adjustment hint at an imminent turnaround.

Swing speed spike signals Bellinger’s return to power

Eno Sarris of The Athletic recently highlighted a compelling transformation in Bellinger’s mechanics. The outfielder has boosted his average swing speed from 69.1 mph during the 2024 season to an impressive 71.6 mph this year—representing the fifth-largest improvement across the entire major leagues. This dramatic shift has elevated him from below-average territory into above-average range, a critical factor in predicting power output.

This accelerated swing is already yielding tangible benefits in contact quality. Bellinger’s average exit velocity has climbed to 90.3 mph (up from 87.9 mph last season), while his barrel percentage has jumped to 9.1% compared to just 6.1% in 2024. Perhaps most encouragingly, his hard-hit rate has surged to 42.4% from the previous mark of 35.9%.

For a player striving to recapture his All-Star caliber form, these metrics represent crucial indicators of progress. Enhanced bat speed typically precedes statistical production on the scorecard. Bellinger has reportedly adopted a torpedo bat model this season—a design choice shared by several Yankees teammates—and this equipment modification appears to be delivering promising results.

Injury setback behind slow momentum

Bellinger’s progress encountered a minor obstacle last weekend when back discomfort forced him to miss two contests against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He returned for the series finale, collecting one hit in five at-bats during a narrow 5-4 extra-inning defeat. While his statistical output remains subdued, the quality of contact and improved pitch selection suggest his timing is gradually synchronizing.

“It’s feeling good. Responded well,” Bellinger remarked regarding his back condition after rejoining the lineup. The Yankees are particularly invested in his continued health, especially with Giancarlo Stanton currently sidelined and DJ LeMahieu not expected back until late April.

Big shoes to fill, but realistic expectations

The Yankees pivoted to Bellinger following Juan Soto’s departure to free agency and the crosstown Mets, signing the 29-year-old to provide left-handed power alongside Aaron Judge in the heart of their batting order. Though matching Soto’s 41-homer output from 2024 represents an unrealistic benchmark, the organization believed Bellinger could still deliver significant offensive value, particularly with Yankee Stadium’s right-field dimensions playing to his pull-side power.

Bellinger arrives in New York with established credentials. His career-best season featured 47 home runs (2019), and just two years ago he posted an impressive .307/.356/.525 slash line with 26 homers for the Chicago Cubs.

“If he can hit 25 homers again—and his new bat speed says he could—he’ll help make up for that loss,” Sarris noted in his analysis.

Signs of a turnaround?

While Bellinger’s box score production hasn’t yet aligned with his underlying metrics, the combination of improving data points and physical recovery signals a player potentially on the verge of a hot streak. The Yankees‘ explosive offensive start—76 runs through nine games—has afforded him a grace period to refine his approach without undue pressure.

Should Bellinger maintain his positive trajectory in swing speed and contact quality, he may soon rediscover the form that once made him one of baseball’s premier offensive talents. With the Yankees already tied atop the league leaderboard in home runs, Bellinger’s resurgence could elevate an already formidable lineup to unprecedented heights.

Big hopes for Yankees

Cody Bellinger‘s Yankees tenure hasn’t launched with the immediate impact many envisioned, but early performance indicators suggest better production lies ahead. His significantly improved bat speed, enhanced exit velocity, and the potential advantages of Yankee Stadium’s dimensions collectively establish favorable conditions for a rebound season.

If he successfully translates these technical improvements into consistent game production, the Yankees might discover they’ve secured more than a serviceable replacement for Soto—they could have reclaimed an All-Star caliber contributor to their championship aspirations.
