More than three months after an infamous World Series moment at Yankee Stadium, Yankees fan Austin Capobianco remains at the center of controversy. The 38-year-old Connecticut native, who grabbed and pried open the glove of Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts in Game 4, has faced relentless backlash, an indefinite ban from Major League Baseball, and even bizarre anonymous harassment.

The incident, which unfolded live before 16 million television viewers and has since been replayed countless times online, led to an immediate ejection and, months later, MLB’s decision to bar Capobianco from all major league ballparks. But according to The Athletic, the fallout has gone beyond official consequences—Capobianco has faced a flood of threats, obscene messages, and even anonymous packages sent to his family’s home and workplace.

“It was poop,” Capobianco said, describing one delivery, which ended up at his parents’ Connecticut home due to outdated address records. His office, where he works in the family’s food service supply business, received other unsolicited packages.

“All the stuff my family has had to deal with because of me,” he said. “The nonstop phone calls. The people sending me pictures of their ugly looking penises. The packages.”

Capobianco insists he regrets interfering with Betts and wishes the incident “never happened.” While disappointed in MLB’s decision, he understands the penalty and hopes to eventually return to Yankee Stadium, where he has attended games since childhood.

His role in the controversial play stemmed from a split-second decision. Sitting in Section 109 with his brother and friends, he found himself in the path of a Gleyber Torres foul ball. The ball reached Betts’ glove—before Capobianco’s hands intervened.

What followed was a rare ruling of fan interference. Betts exchanged words with Capobianco and his group, while stadium security swiftly escorted Capobianco and his friend John Hansen out of the ballpark. Initially told they could return for Game 5, they were later barred, with the Yankees donating their tickets to a family with a child battling cancer.

Since then, Capobianco has distanced himself from the moment, avoiding social media and declining to watch replays. But in the immediate aftermath, he embraced his notoriety, speaking with ESPN and appearing on a Barstool Sports podcast.

A ban with no timeline

MLB cited a “serious risk to the health and safety” of Betts in handing down its indefinite suspension last month. A league spokesperson also noted that another fan in the section had previously reported concerns about Capobianco’s group’s behavior.

While Betts initially downplayed the situation, he later spoke candidly on Peacock’s “Back That Year Up 2024,” saying, “I would really say ‘F— you guys.’”

Under the terms of the ban, Capobianco is prohibited from attending MLB games or events but may attend minor league games, provided they are not played in stadiums owned by major league teams.

“I’m a hero in Yankees land. I’m a villain in America,” Capobianco said. “I don’t really care. I just want to be forgotten about.”
