Yankees star Aaron Judge recently shed light on his contract negotiations during an appearance on the “Casa De Klub” podcast. He revealed that his wife, Samantha Bracksieck, played a pivotal role in securing his nine-year, $360 million deal with the team in December 2022.
Aaron Judge recounted a moment when the contract discussions had reached a standstill. Following his wife’s advice, he decided to call team owner Hal Steinbrenner directly to convey his feelings about staying with the Yankees.
The slugger also shared his surprise at being named team captain, noting that he was unaware of the decision before it was announced. Aaron Judge stressed that his primary goal was never to become captain but to play for his city, fans, family, and teammates.
“It’s pretty surreal,” he said. “For me, I never played the game to be that … to be the next captain. I just play to play. I play for my city, I play for the fans, I play for my family, I play for my teammates.”
How wife played a key role in Aaron Judge’s Yankees stay
Aaron Judge described a late-night conversation with Bracksieck in California, just hours before they were set to leave for their wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii. As they reviewed offers from various teams, the slugger expressed his desire to remain in New York before his wife.
“… It’s funny. I was in California. Sam and I were headed to Hawaii to celebrate our [wedding] anniversary. We had a flight at 8 a.m., so 2 o’clock in the morning, 3 o’clock, we’re just staying up … we’re going back and forth about different offers from different teams. What do you want to do? And I’m telling her, ‘I want to stay in New York. I don’t want to go anywhere else.’
“The conversations with New York really weren’t going anywhere. She was like, ‘Call Hal, just call him up. Tell him how you’re feeling. Tell him what you think.’ ”

Aaron Judge recalled messaging Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, who was vacationing overseas, and subsequently having a phone call with him.

During the call, Aaron Judge expressed his wish to remain with the Yankees, requesting just one additional year on his contract. Steinbrenner readily agreed to the request.
The Yankees captain described the excitement he and his wife, Samantha, felt during the call, which was on speakerphone. The conversation took an unexpected turn when Steinbrenner announced that Aaron Judge would be named the next Yankees captain, likening him to former captains Thurman Munson and Derek Jeter.
Aaron Judge admitted he was more stunned by the captaincy news than the nine-year contract. He recalled his wife urging him to respond as he was momentarily speechless.

Aaron Judge also mentioned supporting Bracksieck at the New York City Marathon in November, where they were photographed embracing after the race. The couple, who married in Hawaii in December 2021, are known for keeping their long-term relationship, which dates back to high school, private.
