New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole delivered his best performance of the season powering his team to a 4-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Friday. As it showcases his return to dominant form, manager Aaron Boone lauded Gerrit Cole’s outing, calling it “great” and affirming that Cole looked every bit the team’s ace.
“I thought he was great,’’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game. “He looked like our ace,’’
Gerrit Cole pitched a season-high six innings, throwing 106 pitches, the most this year. His outing marked a significant improvement from his previous four starts, where he had not pitched beyond five innings. The right-hander allowed only one run in the second inning, surrendered five hits, walked one, and struck out seven.
Boone highlighted Gerrit Cole’s consistent pitch quality and competitive edge throughout the game, noting that he seemed to enjoy himself on the mound. The Yankees ace mentioned that his command improved as the game went on, despite the humid conditions in Baltimore.

After giving up an RBI triple to Ramon Urias in the second inning, Gerrit Cole bounced back by striking out Gunnar Henderson to end the frame. He then restricted the Orioles to just two more baserunners for the rest of his outing.
Gerrit Cole silences doubters, powers Yankees to win
Despite a controversial ninth-inning incident where benches were cleared after Clay Holmes hit Heston Kjerstad, Gerrit Cole’s strong performance was the highlight, providing a much-needed boost for the Yankees as they seek to regain their early-season form.
Yankees manager highlighted the significance of Gerrit Cole’s six-inning performance, noting its crucial role in easing the burden on the overworked bullpen.
Teammate Aaron Judge commended the ace’s effort against what he termed as one of the top offenses in the American League, praising Gerrit Cole’s ability to command both sides of the plate and secure key outs, particularly against elite hitters like Gunnar Henderson.
“That’s one of the best, if not the best offense in the AL,” the Yankees captain said. “For him to come in and do what he did there for us, he’s working both sides of the plate, got some big outs, especially [when] you’ve got Henderson at the top of that lineup. He’s the MVP right now. It’s impressive to see him go out there and work that offense.”

Gerrit Cole credited his success to improved command after a rocky first two innings. While he hasn’t fully recaptured his Cy Young Award-winning form from last year, this outing, along with a strong performance in Toronto on June 30, indicates he’s getting closer. This start was a solid rebound from his previous struggle against the Red Sox.

Boone extolled Gerrit Cole as one of the great pitchers of his generation, lauding his competitive spirit and control throughout the game.
“He’s one of his generation’s great pitchers,’’ he said. “He’s an ace. He loves challenges and competition. Today, watching him, he was in control.”
The manager’s remarks underscored the pitcher’s status as the team’s ace and his ability to rise to challenging situations.
