On a seemingly routine afternoon at Wrigley Field, the Yankees were cruising with a comfortable 3-0 lead against the Cubs. The YES Network’s broadcast was flowing as smoothly as the Yanks’ performance — until it wasn’t. What started as light-hearted banter between veteran broadcaster Michael Kay and color commentator John Flaherty soon turned into one of the most awkward exchanges in recent YES Network history. In the top of the seventh inning, while the game itself might not have had much drama, Michael Kay and Flaherty provided their own form of entertainment. For the fans watching at home, it felt less like a professional sports broadcast and more like witnessing a couple’s spat in real time.

The incident

It all began when John Flaherty casually mentioned that the team bus had been unusually quiet on the way to the ballpark. “I just had a lot of time to think on the team bus today because it was just very quiet,” Flaherty said. Michael Kay took the bait. “So you’d rather me be chatty, I wasn’t feeling great,” Kay responded, sounding defensive from the jump.

Flaherty, who hadn’t worked a road game with Kay in some time, wasn’t ready to let it go. “I haven’t seen you in a long time, right? You don’t work road trips anymore when I’m on the road,” he remarked. “So I thought we would catch up, but it quickly was made evident that you weren’t in the mood.” At this point, it became clear that this wasn’t just the usual light-hearted ribbing. Flaherty seemed genuinely upset about Kay’s lack of engagement, and Michael Kay, who is typically quick-witted, didn’t offer his usual playful retort. Instead, he leaned into the tension: “Interesting narrative that you’re putting together because I’ve been told by the executives that you prefer to work with Ryan Ruocco. That’s why you two guys are matched up all the time. It’s just what I heard. I don’t know if there’s any truth to it.”

The tension was palpable, and the airwaves were thick with awkwardness. Flaherty, seemingly trying to maintain some semblance of professionalism, shot back, “I just put it together that the road trips you don’t want to go on that I end up working with Ryan Ruocco because we’re willing to work the games on the road.”

Michael Kay, now on the defensive, responded curtly: “Listen, John, I don’t pick out my schedule. I go where I’m told.”

The exchange was followed by a heavy, uncomfortable silence, the kind that could make even the most oblivious viewer squirm as Juan Soto prepared to reach the box following Gleyber Torres’ ground out. Finally, Michael Kay, perhaps realizing how strange the moment had become, tried to soften the blow: “I’ll be very chatty tomorrow,” he offered, a comment that fell flat. Flaherty, however, wasn’t ready to drop it, replying, “No, I just want to make sure that you’re okay. I was a little worried about you.” Michael Kay’s final line, “I think you were worried that I wouldn’t be talking much on the park,” ended the awkward tension, but the damage had been done, and fans had something else to talk about, beyond the Yankees’ consistent persistence with Alex Verdugo over calling up Jasson Dominguez, who could use some big league at-bats nearing the playoffs.

Reddit reacts to the tense exchange between Michael Kay and John Flaherty

As the exchange played out live, Yankees fans took to Reddit to dissect the bizarre moment. It didn’t take long for the awkwardness to go viral among the Yankees community, with fans expressing everything from shock to amusement at what they had just witnessed.

User u/spicycurry55 captured the essence of the moment perfectly: “At first I thought it was playful, but then they just kept going lmao. And then the 10 seconds of silence was hilarious.” That 10-second pause, which in real-time felt like an eternity, became the focal point for many fans. It was a signal that what began as a potential joke had crossed into uncomfortable territory.

Fan u/TegridyPharmz added, “I’d love to see the video of them during this convo,” while u/jchunk13 chimed in with a sarcastic jab: “‘I’m worried about you’ is a great thing to say to someone if you want to piss them off during an argument lol.” It seemed as though the back-and-forth between Michael Kay and Flaherty had struck a nerve with fans, many of whom likened the interaction to a couple’s fight.

u/davekva succinctly summed it up: “It was soooo weird. All the back and forth was weird, and then the 10 seconds of silence let us all know it was very real.” This sentiment was echoed by user u/RollofDuctTape, who stated, “Flaherty chose violence today 😳 And Kay gave it to him 😭.”

Redditors were quick to point out the absurdity of Michael Kay’s claim that he didn’t pick his own schedule. u/spencerr13 called him out: “‘I don’t pick my games,’ yeah right Michael, you haven’t called an Oakland A’s game this decade 😂.” The fan reaction wasn’t limited to poking fun at Kay’s selective road game schedule, but also his thinly veiled insecurity during the exchange.

User u/PM_ME_CHIPOTLE2 dug deeper into Kay’s alleged road game preferences, stating, “Kay has been picking his road games for literally at least a decade, if not more. Every time they were in a ‘minor’ city like Oakland, Minneapolis… he was never there.” This observation led to a broader conversation among fans about Michael Kay’s role within the YES Network and how his seniority allows him to avoid the less desirable road trips.

The fan sentiment wasn’t entirely anti-Kay, though. Some users, like u/JustRealizedImaIdiot, took a more neutral stance: “Felt more like Flaherty was just trying to poke fun at MK the same way Paul and Meredith often do, but MK took it too seriously this time and took it to a place it didn’t need to go.” Others agreed that the exchange was more awkward than malicious, but there was a prevailing feeling that Kay’s comment about Ruocco was a step too far.

As one fan, u/sailor-moonie-, put it: “I think Flaherty was being passive-aggressive, and Kay was being straight-up aggressive lol.”

Another fan, u/InaudibleShout, added to the chorus of skepticism about Michael Kay’s road game claims: “The balls on Kay to suggest it just happens to be a corporate scheduling coincidence that he basically never works the Central games… we have a literal meme about it.” The “meme” referenced here is a long-standing joke within the Yankees fandom that Kay only shows up for the more glamorous road trips, like the one to Wrigley Field, while leaving the less exciting destinations to Ruocco and others.

Some fans, however, were more interested in the fallout than the moment itself. u/bored_two_deathh asked, “How long until this story leaves the confines of Reddit and becomes a thing? Seems to be gaining momentum.” With such a high-profile awkward moment happening live on-air, it wasn’t long before fans speculated about the future dynamics between Kay and Flaherty.

Perhaps the most telling comment came from u/RollofDuctTape, who pointed out: “If you think they were joking around, you don’t know Michael Kay. The dead giveaway was ‘I heard from executives you prefer to work with Ruocco over me.’ Kay would never joke about that. He’s very sensitive.” This hit at the core of why the interaction felt so off to fans — Kay’s usual banter seemed to morph into something more personal and raw, which only added to the strangeness of the moment.

As fans continue to dissect the incident, it remains to be seen how Michael Kay and John Flaherty will handle their next broadcast together. Will they address the awkward moment, or will it be swept under the rug? If fan sentiment is anything to go by, many are hoping for a follow-up — not just for the sake of clarity, but for the pure entertainment value.

For now, one thing is certain: Yankees fans got more than they bargained for during a routine road game broadcast, and the ripples from this uncomfortable exchange will be felt for some time to come. What do you think? Leave your comment below!

I miss KENNY SINGLETON.

A well written piece on this awkward relationship. It’s a shame yet not totally surprising. A “shame” because both these guys can make worthwhile observations about a ballgame. And Kay is a fairly good play by play guy. Compared to most local MLB game announcers the guys at the mic for Yankee games are generally a cut above. However, Flaherty is so cut n’ dry he comes off like a drill instructor. And Kay has always been a bit egotistical and hypersensitive. Frankly I prefer Jack Curry to Kay or Ryan Ruoco who tries a little too hard to be dramatic. Curry is just a solid pro.
