New York — The New York Yankees rolled the dice this offseason. They extended a $22.025 million qualifying offer to Trent Grisham. He accepted it. Now the question hanging over the Bronx is whether the center fielder can prove his breakout season was real.

This is not a small gamble. Grisham hit .191 with a .651 OPS and an 87 wRC+ from 2022 to 2024. He was a fourth outfielder for most of his Yankees tenure. Then something clicked in 2025. The Yankees saw a different player emerge.

The 29-year-old set career highs across the board. He belted 34 home runs. He drove in 74 runs. He posted an .811 OPS and a 129 wRC+ while serving as the Yankees primary center fielder and leadoff man against right-handed pitching.

Former first-round pick finally finds himself

Manager Aaron Boone watched Trent Grisham transform in real time. The skipper spoke about it in August while explaining why the outfielder’s path was not unusual.

“This is a former first-round pick, talented guy. Everyone’s trajectory is not like this,” Boone said, gesturing in a straight line. “It’s a hard game. Hitting in the big leagues is hard. You see countless examples of guys finding themselves, really figuring it out a little bit, especially offensively, as their career unfolds.”

Boone added perspective on Grisham’s journey. “He’s had success. He’s hit for some power, but certainly, this is the best offensive season by a lot that he’s had.”

The Yankees believed enough to extend the qualifying offer. They are betting $22 million that the improvements are legitimate. The organization has seen enough to commit.

Cashman defends the investment

General manager Brian Cashman went on record last week backing the decision. He estimated the odds of Grisham accepting were 50-50. The outfielder chose security over the open market.

“We do believe in the player,” Cashman said. “We believe his adjustments are real. His swing is made for Yankee Stadium. He’s clearly someone that’s not afraid to play here because he’s performed here.”

Cashman also placed Grisham in context with the rest of the outfield market. He ranked him third behind Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker in a thin class. Some teams might have waited to see if Tucker and Bellinger signed elsewhere before pivoting to Grisham.

The Yankees did not wait. They made their move and got their man back. The front office acted decisively.

Numbers back up Grisham’s breakout

Grisham’s track record screams regression candidate. But the underlying metrics tell a different story. He set personal bests in several quality of contact categories that suggest the power surge was not a fluke.

His Barrel% jumped to 14.2. His average exit velocity hit 91.1 mph. His .353 wOBA and .366 xwOBA both ranked as career highs. That last number landed in the 90th percentile across the league.

Grisham’s plate discipline also improved dramatically. His 17.3 Chase% and 14.1 BB% both ranked in the 99th percentile. He stopped swinging at bad pitches and started working deep counts.

One could argue he was too patient at times. But he also pulled balls in the air at a career-high 23.5% clip. That combination produces home runs in Yankee Stadium’s short porch. The Yankees have seen it work firsthand.

“All the underlying information that would lead you to believe real or not real, it points to the real arrow,” Cashman said. “All the information backs up that the changes he made are real and that it should continue.”

Mental transformation played key role

The mechanical improvements only tell part of the story. Grisham also overhauled his mental approach. He sought help from Dr. Bob Rotella, a sports psychologist known for working with golfers.

Grisham admitted he spent years “thinking like crap” and “playing like crap.” The sessions with Rotella changed that. He learned to approach at-bats with a clearer mindset. The results followed for the Yankees.

The Yankees earned the nickname “The Big Sleep” for Grisham due to his calm demeanor in clutch moments. That mental composure helped him deliver huge hits throughout the Yankees season.

Second chance at free agency awaits

Grisham returns to a Yankees team he clearly enjoys playing for. The one-year deal gives him motivation to prove 2025 was no accident. If he replicates his performance, he hits free agency again next winter at age 30.

That timing matters. He would be ineligible for another qualifying offer. Teams could sign him without forfeiting draft pick compensation. The market would be wide open for the Yankees outfielder.

A strong 2026 could earn Grisham the multi-year deal he passed up this winter. The Yankees are not ruling out discussions about a longer contract either. Cashman left the door open.

“I’m not saying that’s something we will pursue,” Cashman said, “but I wouldn’t be afraid to pursue it either.”

The Yankees made a bold bet on Grisham. Now he has to prove them right. The qualifying offer acceptance does not preclude the Yankees from pursuing Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker. Cashman has been clear on that point.

With Aaron Judge locked in right field and Grisham patrolling center, the Yankees have flexibility to add another impact bat. The outfield picture is taking shape. The organization believes Grisham is part of the solution.

His swing fits Yankee Stadium perfectly. His mental approach has transformed. The underlying numbers support sustained production. The Yankees bet big on all of it being real.
