NEW YORK — Trent Grisham accepted the Yankees’ 22 million dollar qualifying offer on Tuesday. The move keeps him in pinstripes for 2026.

It also reflects a decision that mirrors Aaron Judge’s approach three years ago. The link between the two players may have shaped Grisham’s choice to take a one year deal instead of testing the open market.

Career year creates difficult choice

Trent Grisham delivered the best season of his career in 2025. He hit 34 home runs. He drove in 74 runs. His .235 average paired with a .348 on base percentage and .464 slug produced an .812 OPS. His 3.5 WAR ranked second among Yankees position players. Only Judge finished ahead of him.

The jump in production was dramatic. He made only 5 million dollars in 2025. The qualifying offer represented a 17 million dollar increase. Free agency might have given him a long term deal. Spotrac projected his market between 48 million and 66 million dollars across four seasons.

Grisham chose the path with guaranteed earnings. The Yankees showed strong belief in his growth. Judge offered an example of what confidence can produce. Yankee Stadium also suited his swing and played a major role in his breakout.

Judge’s blueprint offers a path forward

Judge faced a similar crossroads before the 2022 season. He turned down a Yankees extension. He then hit an American League record number of home runs. After that historic year he signed a 360 million dollar contract. Grisham watched that process from afar. Now he plays beside Judge in the Yankees outfield.

Brendan Kuty of The Athletic noted the similarity between the two situations.

He wrote, “Don’t forget: Grisham is close with Judge, who was one of the best bet-on-yourself cases in recent memory.”

Kuty added, “In 2022, Judge turned down the Yankees’ extension offer and turned it into an American League home run record and a $360 million payday that winter. Maybe Grisham hopes to follow a similar path.”

The connection between the two players goes beyond numbers. They spend every day together in the clubhouse. They share routines around the cage. They stand near each other in the outfield and during celebrations. Judge’s presence shows Grisham what taking a one year deal can lead to if the production continues.

Grisham’s motivation sits in the next locker

Kuty pointed out how much motivation Grisham can draw from Judge in the season ahead.

He wrote, “There’s reason to believe Grisham might be reaching his offensive peak, especially in getting another chance to hit in front of Aaron Judge on a winning team with a home ballpark fit for his approach.”

Kuty continued, “And wouldn’t he be even more motivated going into 2026 with a big contract and a shot at another one next offseason (when he can’t receive another qualifying offer)?”

Grisham often hits in front of Judge. That lineup spot gives him better looks from pitchers. Teams do not want extra traffic on base with Judge in the box. The protection helps him swing more confidently. Judge’s power also changes how defenses align and can open up room for the outfielder to find the gaps.

Grisham cannot receive another qualifying offer after next year. That rule increases the incentive to produce at a high level. Judge set the standard for what can happen when a player bets correctly on himself.

Yankees gain roster stability

General manager Brian Cashman called Grisham “an important piece taken care of off last year’s team.” The Yankees offered the qualifying offer fully prepared to pay the 22 million dollar price. Cashman said at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas that Grisham “had a hell of a year for us” and was “one of the big reasons we had the level of success we did.”

With Grisham back, the Yankees secure center field for 2026. Judge returns in right. The stability frees the front office to pursue Cody Bellinger or other options without urgency. Cashman has said the outfielder’s deal does not block them from seeking upgrades. The Yankees want more left handed power but value the defense and range he brings.

The outfield group now includes Judge, Grisham, Jasson Dominguez and top prospect Spencer Jones. It gives the Yankees depth while still allowing for additions. Bellinger remains a possibility for left field.

Risk and reward align in the Bronx

Only four players accepted qualifying offers this offseason. Nine turned them down. Grisham joined Cubs starter Shota Imanaga, former Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres and Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff on the acceptance list.

Many around baseball believed Grisham would enter free agency. The center field market was thin. His defense graded well despite some regression. His power growth at age 29 suggested he had room to improve.

He saw the benefits of staying. The Yankees think his development is real. Cashman said “all the support information backs up the changes he made are real and should continue.” He added that Grisham’s success came both at home and on the road. The Yankees do not view his 2025 performance as a ballpark illusion.

Stadium and surroundings matter

Yankee Stadium fits Grisham’s left handed swing. He can pull the ball with confidence into the short porch. His power to right center also works in the larger alley. The dimensions highlighted his strengths and helped spark his career year.

New York also requires composure. Grisham has now been in the Bronx for two seasons. He knows the expectations and pressure. He has handled the environment well. Judge’s presence provides a model for thriving in it.

Free agency awaits in one year

Grisham turns 30 next season. A second straight strong year could set up a major contract. He would reach the market without draft pick compensation. Teams would not lose selections to sign him. That improves his value.

The Yankees gave him the platform to showcase his progress. Judge showed how powerful that platform can be. Grisham now has a full season to prove his 2025 jump was real. The Yankees believe the changes will hold. Grisham believes the same.

The Yankees gain stability in the outfield. Grisham gains a chance to raise his long term earning power. Judge’s influence remains part of the story. His example guides the teammate who chose a similar path.
