Three weeks ago, the New York Yankees were a powerhouse, riding high on one of the best roster constructions in recent years. However, a dismal 5-15 stretch has left them desperate for upgrades across the board—particularly in the infield and bullpen, while also keeping an eye on the faltering rotation. As the trade deadline looms, MLB executives anticipate a highly aggressive stance from Brian Cashman and the Yankees. Here’s a comprehensive look at the potential trades that could bolster the Bronx Bombers.

Yankees’ infield reinforcements

Luis Rengifo (Los Angeles Angels)

Luis Rengifo, a dynamic bat-first infielder from the Angels, has been a consistent offensive performer, posting an above-average wRC+ for the third consecutive season and a career-high 22 stolen bases. His offensive prowess is marred by defensive struggles, but his ability to play multiple infield positions makes him a versatile addition. MLB insider Jim Bowden proposed a trade sending Rengifo and closer Carlos Estévez to the Yankees in exchange for outfielder Everson Pereira and right-handed pitcher Ian Hamilton. Although this deal faced skepticism, Rengifo’s offensive capabilities make him a valuable target for the Yankees.

Jonathan India (Cincinnati Reds)

The Yankees are linked to Reds’ infielder Jonathan India, who has been scorching hot since the start of June, slashing .369/.451/.583. India’s leadership and offensive output could provide a much-needed boost to the Yankees’ lineup. However, India’s value is high, and acquiring him would likely require a substantial package. A proposed deal could involve New York sending top-10 prospect Brock Selvidge, 2B/3B Jorbit Vivas, and reliever Jack Neely to Cincinnati. This trade would strengthen the Yankees’ infield and add depth to their bullpen with the inclusion of reliever Lucas Sims.

Cody Bellinger (Chicago Cubs)

Chicago Cubs’ Cody Bellinger, who can play both outfield and first base, has emerged as a top target. Despite a dip in his numbers this season, Bellinger’s left-handed power is tailor-made for Yankee Stadium’s short porch. His defensive versatility and potential to bounce back offensively make him a key addition. Notably, the Yankees were linked to Cody Bellinger in the 2024 offseason too. Bellinger’s hefty contract might be a hurdle, but his impact on the Yankees’ lineup could be significant.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays)

In a surprising twist, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has softened his stance on playing for the Yankees. With the Blue Jays languishing in the AL East, Guerrero could be a monumental addition to the Yankees’ offense, especially with Anthony Rizzo sidelined. Although Guerrero is under contract through 2025, acquiring him would require a significant trade package. His power and offensive capabilities make him an enticing option, but the Yankees would need to be willing to part with their top-tier talent.

Andrew Vaughn (Chicago White Sox)

Andrew Vaughn, a young first baseman with the White Sox, is another potential trade target. Vaughn has rebounded from a slow start to his season, slashing .337/.371/.561 in June. His right-handed bat would provide flexibility and depth to the Yankees’ lineup, particularly against left-handed pitchers. Vaughn’s club control through 2026 makes him an attractive long-term addition.

Yankees outfield upgrades

Luis Robert Jr. (Chicago White Sox)

Luis Robert Jr., a consistent All-Star outfielder, offers a blend of power and speed that would significantly bolster the Yankees’ outfield. Although Robert is a natural center fielder, his addition could push Aaron Judge back to a corner outfield spot, enhancing the Yankees’ defensive alignment. However, acquiring Robert would come at a high prospect cost, given his team-friendly contract through 2027.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. (Miami Marlins)

Jazz Chisholm Jr., with his ability to play both second base and the outfield, brings speed and versatility to the Yankees. Chisholm’s offensive production, coupled with his defensive flexibility, makes him a valuable addition. His underwhelming defensive metrics are offset by his offensive upside, and his speed on the base paths would complement Anthony Volpe’s. Chisholm’s long-term control through 2026 adds to his appeal, especially with several Yankees expected to hit free agency.

Yankees need of the hour: Bullpen bolstering

Tanner Scott (Miami Marlins)

Tanner Scott has developed into one of the premier left-handed relievers in baseball, boasting a 1.42 ERA in 37 appearances this season. His elite performance and All-Star recognition make him a coveted asset. With Clay Holmes struggling, Scott’s addition would provide much-needed depth and stability to the Yankees’ bullpen. Although the Orioles are also in the mix, the Yankees must prioritize acquiring Scott to solidify their late-inning relief options.

Carlos Estévez (Los Angeles Angels)

Carlos Estévez, the AL Reliever of the Month for June, brings a dominant presence to the bullpen. With a 2.89 ERA and 16 saves this season, Estévez’s reliability in high-leverage situations is invaluable. His inclusion in a potential trade package with Luis Rengifo adds significant value, addressing both the Yankees’ infield and bullpen needs simultaneously.

Starting pitching

Michael Lorenzen (Texas Rangers)

Michael Lorenzen, an All-Star with a 3.21 ERA this season, is a dependable veteran starter who could shore up the back of the Yankees’ rotation. Lorenzen’s availability aligns with the Rangers’ struggles, making him a realistic target. Adding Lorenzen would provide stability and experience to a rotation that has been inconsistent.

Garrett Crochet (Chicago White Sox)

Garrett Crochet, a highly coveted pitcher, has excelled in his first season as a starter. The Yankees’ reluctance to trade top prospect Spencer Jones might complicate this acquisition, but Crochet’s dominance makes him a worthwhile pursuit. His ability to strengthen the rotation or the bullpen offers flexibility, enhancing the Yankees’ pitching depth.

Max Scherzer (Texas Rangers)

Max Scherzer, a potential trade target from the struggling Rangers, would be a major splash for the Yankees. Scherzer’s track record as a big-time performer with two World Series titles under his belt makes him an enticing option. Although Scherzer is on an expiring contract, his addition would significantly boost the Yankees’ chances of making a deep postseason run.

Catchers

Elias Diaz (Colorado Rockies)

Elias Diaz, an All-Star catcher, offers an upgrade behind the plate with his offensive production. Diaz’s .305 average and .785 OPS this season make him a valuable addition to the Yankees’ lineup. His defensive capabilities, particularly in catcher’s caught stealing above average, further enhance his appeal. Acquiring Diaz would allow the Yankees to keep Ben Rice at first base and provide depth with Anthony Rizzo’s eventual return.

The New York Yankees are at a crossroads, with the trade deadline offering a critical juncture to address their weaknesses and solidify their roster for a postseason push. From infield reinforcements to bullpen bolstering and starting pitching upgrades, the Yankees must be proactive and aggressive in their pursuit of these potential trades. The stakes are high, and the exigency for Brian Cashman to deliver cannot be overstated. With a combination of strategic moves and key acquisitions, the Yankees can transform their current slump into a formidable campaign for their first World Series title since 2009.
