It was a night to remember for Yankees’ minor league prospect Jorbit Vivas, who delivered a spectacular performance for the Hudson Valley Renegades in their 16-3 thrashing of the Brooklyn Cyclones. As DJ LeMahieu continued his rehab stint, Vivas seized the spotlight, peppering hits across the field and driving in five runs, showcasing the offensive prowess that has fans and analysts alike buzzing about his potential future in the majors.

Jorbit Vivas’ offensive onslaught

The game started with a bang as the Renegades erupted for five runs in the first inning, setting the tone for the night. DJ LeMahieu, in his second rehab game, doubled to ignite the rally. Following him, Jorbit Vivas walked, setting up Jace Avina’s league-leading 13th double, which brought home LeMahieu and Vivas. Omar Martinez capped the inning with a towering three-run homer, giving Hudson Valley a commanding 5-0 lead.

Five … count 'em … FIVE hits and FIVE RBIs for Jorbit Vivas!

Vivas continued to dazzle throughout the game. In the third inning, he singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Martinez. His RBI single in the fourth inning further padded the Renegades’ lead, driving in Cole Gabrielson and Kyle Battle. By the sixth inning, Jorbit Vivas doubled, and Avina brought him home with another RBI single, pushing the score to 11-3.

The seventh inning saw Vivas once again making an impact with a single that scored Kiko Romero. Rodriguez’s subsequent RBI single extended the lead even further. In the ninth, Vivas put the finishing touches on his magnificent night with a two-run single, bringing the final score to 16-3. His five hits and five RBIs were pivotal in Hudson Valley’s offensive explosion, leaving the Cyclones’ pitching staff in shambles.

Jorbit Vivas’ potential in the Yankees’ infield

Jorbit Vivas’ standout performance begs the question: Is there a place for him in the Yankees’ crowded infield? The Yankees’ infield is currently stacked, with Anthony Rizzo and Anthony Volpe holding down first and shortstop, respectively. Gleyber Torres, despite some inconsistency, has found form again, and LeMahieu’s return will add another reliable option. Additionally, the Yankees have depth in the farm system with Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira, not to mention the versatile Oswaldo Cabrera.

However, Vivas offers something unique. Acquired in a trade with the Dodgers, Vivas has shown his potential with a solid 2023 season and promising ZiPS projections for 2024. His ability to consistently make contact and control the strike zone could be invaluable. Vivas’ bat-to-ball skills are his strongest asset, evidenced by his impressive in-zone contact rates and his low strikeout percentages in Double-A.

Last season, Vivas slashed .280/.391/.436 in Double-A, showcasing his ability to be a tough out. Even though his power might be limited, his high-contact approach and ability to get on base make him a valuable asset. His recent performance in Triple-A, although mixed, highlighted areas for development but also underscored his potential.

The Yankees’ current infield situation is competitive, and while there might not be an immediate opening for Vivas, the future holds possibilities. If the Yankees decide to look for a cost-controlled alternative to Torres at second base, Vivas could be a contender, especially if he continues to develop his offensive game. His natural position at second base might limit his versatility, but his offensive upside could force the Yankees to find a spot for him.

The Yankees’ coaching staff will be closely monitoring Vivas’ progress. With his last option year underway, the pressure is on for Vivas to prove he belongs in the big leagues. His ability to adapt to higher-level pitching and refine his defensive skills will be crucial.

As the Yankees navigate their infield options, Jorbit Vivas’ name will undoubtedly come up in conversations. His performance against the Brooklyn Cyclones was a reminder of his potential, and if he continues to shine, the Yankees might have no choice but to make room for this rising star. For now, Vivas will continue to hone his skills in the minors, but his brilliant display on Thursday night has certainly put him on the radar as a player to watch. What do you think?
